You may have better food....let me try from your bowl first....

food - animal alike eating behavior

I have 2 dogs and one cat. My dog’s bowls are separate far from the other, because my younger dog is a living vacuum and can eat with speed of light whiteout chewing. My older god eats slow and she chew on everything she eats. My cat eats like a princess, very slow and with grace. Now, cat has learned that she has to finish her food or is gone. Even if two bowls for my dogs have identical food, my younger dog always takes an opportunity to check if she can eat from the other bowl first. Many years ago I invited my best friend for dinner. My friend came in with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend starts eating from her plate first saying that she has better food. I never invited him again. Did you ever think that other plate looks better? Do we have the same animal like behavior to fight for food?

our dogs eat out of teh same bowl but they have to take turns Who ever gets there first get his share then the other one can step in if they try to buly thier way in the other one growls! As for people coming to eat thats a shame for every one has the opertunity to put the same food on plate as it comes from the same place. Now at a restrant that could be different for poeple order different things and ya ask if ya can try it to see what it tastes like.

LOL he ate from his gf's plate? I didn't notice hubby ever did that to me when we go out but when he is hungry he will make a sandwich even on a dirty kitchen surface so I always cook and clean up before he gets home I don't eat much at home unless I'm sick or need to go out to work etc so hubby doesn't get much fighting from me about food :) he said I eat like babies :)

I would be stunned if someone reached over and ate off my plate. That is just rude and hateful. It would be like using someone else's toothbrush. You just don't do that. My Mom used to have two dogs that did the same thing...one was old and a slow eater and the other was a vacumm that sucked up everything. She had to stand over them and make them eat their own. Luckly our Morgana is an only child so she has her own dishes of food...I don't think she'd tolerate any other animal around. ~~MY OWN PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG AND BELIEVE IN YOURSELF**

I have same experience with my two dogs. My older dog would look at the bowl of food of the younger dog and sometimes it eat as if they don't have the same food. He would smell at his food then smell the other bowl of food and settle in the other bowl. I don't know what he has in mind but I think I should always clean the bowl.

Our four dogs all go around and like out each others bowls after being feed. The three bigger dogs all eat the same food. Our Maltese has a sensitive stomach so he gets expensive Nutro Max lamb and rice food. The other dogs are happy with what they get. But he thinks the others get something better then he does. He always waits to see if they finish their food before he starts on his. He does not want them to have it is the only reason why he eats sometimes. I do not understand why he thinks they have better food. It is the cheap Ol' Roy dog food from Walmart. He would actually prefer eating eat but then he burps all night long form doing so. So only good food for him. Now even the cat has gotten into the habit of checking all the dogs dishes after they eat. It is funny that before we had one communal bowl. All the dogs would eat whenever they wanted to and we never had a problem with any of them over eating. Then one of our dogs had puppies and after that the Australian Shepherd decided that she needed to eat every thing in site so those puppies would not get it. So now they have separate bowls. The Ausie now gulps down her food and waits for the other dogs to finish so she can go check to see if they left anything. The Cattle Dog. lays down and eats slowly, enjoying each bite. The German Shepherd mix well also gulp down her food. The Maltese eats slowly, I would say enjoying it, but I think in reality it is just, as I said before, so the other dogs do not get it. By the time he starts eating the other three are standing their like vultures ready to scavage anything left behind.

Dogs are very smart. They understand more than we think... I see now that my dogs and my cat have just normal behavior. My cat is always checking dogs bowls, but she is little princess, so they let her eat some food without barking...

Well, your friend's boyfriend really acted a bit weird. If I go out and have meals with my friends, I'll order the dish I like, so I don't think others are having better food. I do always share my food with my husband, so that we can have different types of food. I do not know animals will fight for food, even if they have their food already. I only have a dog in my house, so I haven't observe this yet.

I had two big dogs that went through a change of bowl ritual at every meal. It was so funny, and was not instigated by the one you would expect.

I know a few people like that LOL And just so you don't feel alone, my dog Tazz eats everything and then some - specially the cats food that can't be left out eithrt. As for people... I think we - like the other animals - might have that thing about fighting for the best food. But since we're social animals and live by social rules, we usually are programed not to show it. Of course some people react less to social rules LOL

Actually, animals have their own ethics, unlike human beings. My little pup, Gypsy, who arrived recently, used to steal Tina's food. Now Tina tolerated this for nearly a week, before giving Gypsy such a slap that Gypsy doesn't try stealing food anymore. She knows Tina has to eat too. And Tina is a slow eater. Gypsy can finish in one second what Tina needs twenty minutes to eat. Now, I have two cats too, and Gypsy always eats their leftover..only the leftover..she doesn't steal their food. My two cats never touch what belongs to the other. This boyfriend you mentioned must have been starved in his childhood. LOL!! Cheers and happy mylotting

Both of my dogs think that cat has better food. Cats bowl is very tiny, but they always check it to make sure.... yes, they do have own ethics....

Hi Polachicago, The scene you describe is just like in my house sometimes only I have two cats and one dog. One of my cats eat very slowly and will come back to food but the other one will gobble it all up so I tend to feed Wildred my older cat when the other one isn't around else he losses out. The dog can't get to their food but would eat if he could. The cats don't want to eat his though which is good else there really would be battles at feed time LOL. I remember as a child my brother and I arguing over who had the bigger slice of pie but never really thinking the other one had better food as such so this friends boyfriend I find strange. Huggles. Ellie :D

Thats something strange to hear...But I guess we still hold on to some of our animal instincts and behaviour even past so many million years of civilization. But this looking at someone else's plate is one thing that drives me mad. I simply don't feel like eating after I notice someone staring at my plate. It makes me feel bad. And I've also heard from my mum's old stories that if you feel jealous of other's food and are not satisfied with your own, no matter whatever you eat it doesn't stick to your body. So I guess it is upto the individuals to change themselves.

I trained my dogs to understand the difference in bowl possession. They do recognize the difference, but temptation is stronger sometimes. Your mother was right...

We had a dog that would ignore her food, if she was trying to get better food, until the cats expressed an interest, then she'd "wolf" it down. We think she did that because she had been a stray before we got her. The roomie's dog will go from one bowl to the other, but Cujo will just eat from the other one while Zoe is going between them. I guess he learned this from living with the "big dogs" before he came to us.

My how rude of her boyfriend no wonder you never invited them over again. Nope I've never done anything like that nor have any of my friends. Also, as for my two kitties they get along rather well and share the one dish side by side with no hogging of their food...such angels
