Anyone else out there read the series? Books, in order: The Clan of the Cave Bear, The Valley of Horses, The Mammoth Hunters, The Plains of Passage, The Shelters of Stone. Jean Auel has cancer and is working on the last book of the series now. I can't wait! Ayla is a true heroine. Especially in The Valley of Horses, when she has been kicked out of her clan and is on her own and not only survives, but invents things and finds a better life than the clan could ever dream of. Ayla is a strong woman. What do you think? Which book is your favorite?

I think everyone in my family has read the series. It's funny to listen to us all telling our favorite/worst parts. I can't wait for me - but I always do :)

I loved the series! I just wish it hadn't been so long between each one. Shelters of Stone was very interesting, but my favorite was The Mammoth Hunters. I can't wait for the new one. Any idea when it'll be out? I'm sorry to hear she has cancer.

There was 12 years between The Plains of Passage and The Shelters of Stone. She spends a lot of time researching and writing each book. She lives in Oregon with her husband Ray. Everything I have read says she is currently researching her sixth book. That means she is not even writing it yet. Boo Hoo. I found some facts you might enjoy! Jean Auel's books have sold 34 million copies worldwide.
Jean Auel's books are available in over 20 languages.
Jean Auel is currently writing the sixth Earth's Children book.
According to a 2/18/02 Publishers Weekly article, The Mammoth Hunters was the first novel to "achieve a first printing of more than a million copies" when it was published in 1985.
After the movie version of The Clan of the Cave Bear was released in the 1980s, Auel "[sued] the production company" reported Publishers Weekly in a 2/18/02 article.

Jean Auel spent years researching early man's way of life and beliefs, the way the earth was then, and so forth. These books are Prehistoric Fiction and once you get hooked on them, you will find others, though none as good as Jean Auel's, and you will devour them all! The main character is Ayla. She is found by a clan of cave people as a small "ugly" child. When you read the story you will realize that it is the cave people who are ugly, but they have no clue, they think she is. Anyhow, she is not like them and does not fit in well with their ways but she is adopted by Creb, the powerful medicine man, who goes about teaching her, and she becomes a healer but she continues to break the rules . . . the second book is my favorite, but you should start with the first and go in order, I could talk all day, but don't want to give it away! Their way of life is facinating!

I saw the movie Clan of the Cave Bear when I was 13 and ever since then I was in love with the name Ayla. My first born daughter I named Ayla Marie. I want to read the entire series because I really want to find out where she goes when she leaves the clan and if she gets to see her son
Dirk ever again.

I read them years ago when they were first published. Read the first 3. Liked the first 2 didn't like the 3ed It seem to be just about "sleeping together" so never read any more. Did you see the movie "Clan of the Cave Bear" It sucked because too much of the story was in the mind.
