For those of you who don't know, I recently won the election for city council in the city I live in. Luckily, I had a pretty strong lead over my opponent. One of the other races was extremely close with the winner taking it by only 3 votes. Anyway, the vote had been ratified by the council, and a week later someone mentions that the candidates were not listed when he voted. It seems that 47 people were listed as living in a different ward, and did not get to vote. The person who lost doesn't care, but his supporters are asking for a recall vote for just that ward. It seems like an awful lot to spend for something that the loser doesn't really want to do. What is your opinion?

Every state and jurisdiction has different policies and procedures. In some states a certain percentage difference is enough for an automatic recount. In others, a close enough race allows the loser to choose to have a recount at taxpayer's expense.
I know that recently Sean Parnell, the Lieutenant Governor in Alaska, lost a close race in the republican primary for a congressional seat. He had the option to have a recount, but stated that he did not think that his chances of winning a recount were good enough to warrant spending taxpayer dollars.

My opinion...there should be a recount for the purpose of accuracy and fairness. Those 47 voters have the right to have their votes counted. I hope this isn't up to either candidate...it should be a given.

I don't think it will happen if the candidate doesn't request it. This is, however, a feaux-pas the people in charge will have to address so it won't happen again in the future. With all the problems we experience every election... it's just beyond me how in the greatest nation of all, where democracy and elections are determinants for so many things, we can't get it together and get it right the first time around;)
