Iraq's Cabinet has approved that US troops will be out of all cities and towns by June 30,2009 and out of Iraq completely by December 31,2011.
Do you think Iraq is at a point that they can start taking care of themselves? Is it a good to be annoucing these deadlines? The terrorist could just sit back, wait for us to leave and then take the country over?

I think that this is a great decision. What makes you think that the terrorists are interested in taking over Iraq?

Actualy the bigger concern is Iran's Influence. Al Sadr, the main shiite resisstance leadeer actualy aposed the withdrawl agreament, because it didn't get us out soon enough. Sadr is Iranian and is backed by Iran. This man is probably the most influential cleric in Iraq. I would be more concerned with him. But Al Quieda has stated all along, the new front was Iraq and has openly called for fighters to come in and fight for them and take Iraq.

I agree that Iran is the bigger problem for Iraq. They have said several times that as soon as we leave they are going to move in. We had better not leave until Iraq is able to take care of itself against Iran or we will back again when Iran takes over.

I think these dates are probably subject to change if it appears that the terrorists are still lurking.

They will just stay quite for while and then come back out when we leave.

Ha. I'm not sure what'd be left for them to take over, if that was the plan.
There's no real knowing if Iraq can or can't take care of itself, imo. Mostly because it's up to all of the people left in Iraq if it does or not. How they take care of their own country, and what their government does...makes all the difference.
It's up to them collectively if they'll be able to make it.
Alot of nations have STARTED with more dire circumstances and made it -- however barely.
I'd rather them request aide than to live with an occupation they didn't ask for.
So overall, for this move I have a small "yay".

I think it's great to have reached an agreament. I don't know that it made strategic sense to announce the date however unless the Iraq security forces are TRULY going to be ready to deal with it by that point, but it's still 2 years away so who knows. All thatis needed now is for the Iraq Parliment to vote on the agreement before it is final. We did say when they wanted us to go, we were going to go....and well....there we go.
*****Prediction, book mark this page, we'll be comming back to it*****
Obama will take credit for or people will give him credit for "ending" the Iraq war

I agree. We leave when they ask us to leave. But annoucing the dates is just bad idea to me. It gives the enemy two years to plan what they are goning to do when we go. I really hope Iraq is up to taking care of itself.
I know people will credit obama "with ending the war". THey will forget the deal was drawn up BEFORE he was elected and passed before he took office.
My biggest worry is that Iraq will not be able to handle it and then we will end up back there again.
