ho do you Speed Up Disk Performance Windows Xp?

Sometimes Windows XP becoems sluggish an dit takes for ever to start and whrtn you try to opensome file it is very slow. i know there are some problems but I can not put my hand on it. What can i do to speed up my computer? Would it be better to install Vistas in place of Windows XP?
