My mother use to plead with me not to wear floral patterened clothes with plaid ,that is not allowed in the rules of fashion.I could not see what was wrong with it but I went along with it.Similarly she used to tell me try not to wear more than three colours and ensure there are no colour clashes .She would say for example go for a lot of pastel colours ,even to this day I dont know waht those are.In you wardrobe go for blues ,black, whites firstly as these colours can go with anything and then go for the more exciting colours like the red ,green ,purple and and oranges if you must (and the last two are a last resort ).She would say of you wear bright colour like oranges use something dark to "tone it down ".And the list would go and on.
Now I am grown and the principles firmly planted in my mind ,I consider myself a good 'dresser' but I am now questioniing the rules of dress on the several grounds.Who came up with these rules and what if the person had thought then that green and purple were trendy then we would now be wearing green and purple, so why cant we be pioneers and do likewise.Secondly if all of us dress the same way ,wouldnt that be monotonous and boring .How would we express our individuality.Thirdly who are we dressing for others or our selves and why should we make someone else happy while we would be happier in an unorthodox style .
I say to he** with it and wear what you like

Wear what you like. I think perhaps why certain color combinations are not good because they are not pleasing to the eye in combination or they make a person stick out. Now if your point is to stick out of the crowd then the bolder combinations the better. If you want to blend in w/ a lil style you add lil bits of colors that "pop" w/ your clothes.
But I agree no plaid & floral together. I think that blows a persons mind trying to comprehend the pattern & clash of patterns.

No I wouldnt think so I mean if you like the colors isnt that all that matters. It dosnt really matter what everyone else thinks only what you think of those colors even if they dont match but hey look at it this way you will look unique which is a good way of looking at it lol.

Your mother was brought up in a generation of rules for this and rules for that , so she probably did have trouble understanding your rebellious nature, it is different these days, you are accepted for what you are and not what you wear. When she was alive my mother nearly had a heart attack when she found out I put jeans on my daughter,as far as she was concerned girls wore pretty clothes and learnt to cook and be a housewife, but that was he generation and they conformed to fit in or they felt out of it and that was not very nice for them, times have changed and who really gives a monkeys any more.
