Who has a Chihuahua?

I bought a chihuahua puppy just over a year ago (so she is about 16 months old now). We had the HARDEST time trying to potty train her! She is probably about 80% potty trained at this point in time, but still has an accident in the house every once in a while. She's not spayed, and during the school year she's left home alone for about 7 - 8 hours at a time. I understand that her bladder is very tiny (although she's a "large" chihuahau that weighs about 8 lbs or so), but for months after we got her, we would let her outside to go do her job, and it would never fail she'd come inside and go poop in certain places in the house. She's gotten a LOT better now though. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this same experience with a chihuahua, if it's just the chihuahua breed that have difficulties with being potty trained?

We have a Chihuahua well she is my brothers and his girlfriends. They where living at his girlfriends house and moved in here with her. She is going to be 2 years this month. When they where at his girlfriends house Juliette {the Chihuahua} never went outside to go to the bathroom and every hour or so they would put her on a pee pee pad. When she moved here she started going outside but still has accidents inside where she poops and pees on the floor. She doesn't even let us know she has to go she just does it. We have to take her out like every 2 - 3 hours or she will go on the floor. I think it might just be the Chihuahua breed that has troubles being potty trained.

Thank you for the response. It sounds like to me that chihuahua's just require more attention than some other breeds of dogs. They must just have to go outside more often than others, and I know mine likes getting attnetion, period! I will just keep working with her - I have seen much improvement over the past few weeks, so no giving up hope yet!

My husband got a half chihuahua half weenie dog a chiweenie is what we call it. But yes we had the hardest time training her. In fact she is four and is still not 100% potty trained. On the other hand my mother has a full blood chihuahua that is about two and she didn't have much trouble training her. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the response. Maybe it varies from dog to dog, no matter what breed they are. I'm sure smaller dogs require more attention when it comes to being let outside more and what not. I've just gotten so tired of having to clean up the mess our dog has made in our house!! We had brand new carpet in our house when we moved in, and now our dining room has lots of stains and the carpet needs to be replaced! Ugh! Luckily we want to put in wood floors :)

Yeah it probably does depend on the individual dog. That sucks about your carpet. I know how you feel we got a cocker spaniel puppy about 8 months ago and we had new carpet. Needless to say our carpet doesn't look so new anymore but it is getting better with Toby the cocker pup.

My father in law has a black chihuahua. He is ten years old now. My father in law is strict with him. He pees only outside. He takes him out for a short walk three times a day. In the morning in the afternoon and at night. This saves him from doing his thing inside.

Thank you very much for the response. I love to hear about people that give their pets the special attention they deserve, especially taking the time to walk them and what not. That's very important! Hearing that his 10 year old chihuahua knows to only go to the bathroom outside backs up my thinking that this breed of dog just takes time to train, and that they will do it at their own pace and over time will eventually catch on. It's funny though because I know my dog knows right from wrong, she just has a mind of her own! It can be very annoying at times, but I think she also knows she's VERY cute and that we can't stay mad at her for too long :)

It must be because my Chihuahua is 6 yrs old and still does it. He is also about 9 lbs. I get so mad when I come home and theres poo under the table. He knows when I am upset. I think he trys to go outside but can't always hold it. I wish he would scratch on the door like other dogs. But it's managable. If I ever get another dog it will be a smaller Chihuahua.

Thanks for the response! My dog knows when she's in trouble too. She doesn't have too many accidents in the house, but once in a while still. We have resorted to locking her in her kennel whenever there is no one home, even if we're gonna be gone for only a short time. She always manages to find something to chew on! So we just can't trust her anymore when no one is there to watch her - worse than a child! Haha.

I didn't train mine because she didn't seem to get it when I tried, I just keep her on terrace and I clean the terrace thoroughly everyday and I let her in the house a couple of hrs a day, when accidents do happen I clean after it. I seems a lot of work but it's worth it because I love her and I want her to be able to just "go" when she needs to.

Thank you for the response. It seems to me that chihuahua's just take extra attnetion and time to train. I can tell that mine definitely knows right from wrong, she just simply has a mind of her own! For instance, I let the dogs out every morning when I get up at 6am. There has been a light dusting of snow on the ground for a couple days now. My chihuahua doesn't like to be cold one bit, so when I let her out she tried to get away with just peeing, but it has become a morning routine to pee and poo outside. So I made her stay out, and she eventually went back out to the grass and pooped. Yeah - she can be a big brat!! LOL.
