And, I'm not talking about an emailed "Dear John" letter. I'm talking about job applications. I have been unemployed since February and I'm almost out of unemployment extension. I've never had this much problem finding work - not even temp work. I decided to apply to work for Kmart who was actively advertising for positions in my area. I used their online application process. It seemed easy enough. I gave them responses to education, employment, gaps in employment and then came the questionnaire. There were 76 questions with multiple choice answers. Some were a bit difficult to answer since I haven't worked in the last 6 months the way the question was written, so I chose "answer later". I figured it would ask me to explain like it did with my employment gaps. It didn't. After I finished the lengthy questionnaire, there was another short section that asked how the applicant liked the application process and if there were any problems. I did have a problem where when I was finished the questionnaire last night and said so, it came back with an 'error 404' - it couldn't find the next page. So, I did tell them that. But, when I finished the last "how did you like it" question, it immediately said, "we're sorry, but we have decided to select another candidate for the position who is better suited." WHAT???? A computer program decided I wasn't suitable to work at Kmart even though I've worked for the Federal government (IRS), as an accounts payable clerk, as a medical records clerk, even as a sales clerk when WT Grant Co was still alive and well!! How can someone be rejected by a computer?????!!!!! I've seen some of the people who work for Kmart - how the hell did THEY get the job???? Have you ever experienced something as humiliating as this??? (Yes - it's humiliating, believe me.)

Just a thought... You may be over qualified...That could very well be the reason... My cousin would get this all the time...They'd say she was over qualified but yet they wouldn't even give her a chance...it doesn't make sense... Isn't over qualified better than not qualified? I went to Walmart to apply when they opened a new store here, but I didn't get hired...I was bummed...because like you say, how the heck did that person get the job? One night I was shopping at the new store and when I went to the checkout the lady needed to scan my dog food which was still in the cart...she hesitated and then said, "I've never done this before, this is my first night and I don't know what I'm doing!" Okay.....and I did know what to do but I was the one that was rejected...Go figure.. I would rather apply in person than through the computer any day....Up front and personal..That way I can get my point across and get my questions answered on the spot... I would have to say....You are Over Qualified....that is a good thing...

That's horrible and begs the question about what KMart must be like to work for as a company. I have worked on computer aided sifting (routing) for employment in the UK. We ALWAYS had a human read the applications. The computer could not reject an application, but it could highlight an error. If that were the case then the applicant was advised to call a number for a paper application pack to be sent out if they wished. What happened to you is humiliating and you should not leave it there. I would write to the company asking for clarification. If you still want to work there that is.

That is so awful How can a pc tell what you are like, feeling and how you would do the job. I really feel for you and it does show that the human is best in some ways and that the pc will not overtake the world as some people seem to think. I do hope you find a very good job very soon.

Oh yes, I've been rejected in some online applications as well. I'm not really humiliated, but I do feel a little defensive. I'd rather think that the system was wrong rather than accept the fact that I just don't fit in with the organization. Anyway, I already found work. I haven't started working yet, but the company is a very good company and the first step of the application was through an online questionnaire too so I'm happy about it.

The job was already filled before you started friend. Don't be humiliated, you know what you can do. I wanted to apply for a managers position but couldn't after being a manager and running a successful business for twenty years because I didn't have a credential they required WHAT God has His plan for us, believe it or not, and when we friggin' find it and follow it, well it's just awesome. Keep looking up, you will make it I am sure. Oh and maybe the government will add a bailout for us too .

It sounds to me like that computer that Kmart uses has a major glitch. That is horrible. I guess the computer figured you were over educated for the position? If I am going to be turned down for a job I sure as heck would rather a person do it to me than a computer. I would get in touch with the main Kmart corp. office and complain.

{{{{ Poor Jerzgirl}}}, how horrible for you??? Now if you had said Walmart had done that then I would understand better, their system is set up "so tricky" with those stupid dumb questions they ask you, You know the ones... Yeah I'd contact somebody, I don't know "who" but I"d contact somebody, that rejection will be in the WHOLE K_mart system not just that area you were applying in; that sucks!!! Sorry Girlfriend!! maybe it just wasn't mean to be either to get a job this time of year is going to be really tricky; Good luck!

Hi Jerzgirl, It looks pretty weird to me...I didn't see such application process like this. It seems to be really imprudent rejection without even looking at your application materials. I think the best way to resolve it is speak to the HR person directly. Good luck for your job hunting! And have a nice day~
