IMHO they look like wild turkeys. Although I do not know of turkeys perching on a fence.

Wild turkeys do in fact perch on fences & trees. So do chickens. That's how they evade predators.

Ok. Thanks for that info. All the wild turkeys I've seen have been on the ground.2 people like this

They do not look like turkey to me but rather more like guinea fowl . Guinea fowl are domestic birds like the chicken and are also use to raise alarm if anything is coming near them. I am of native American heritage and have seen plenty of both of them.

They are guinea fowl. My grandmother raised them when I was a young girl. They rousted in the trees. They were good at killing snakes and alerting her of prediters like foxes and cyotes that would be after her chickens. They can be very noisy when disturbed

My niece found out about them when she heard a 'whistling' kind of noise outside. She then snapped them with her digital camera.

Watch fowl. I like that. I had thought though that Prescott Arizona wasn't guinea fowl territory...Go figure!

these are Guineas,
I have four right now myself, the hens say "buckwheat buckwheat" but the males only have a one syllable sound. They make an awful ruckus.
I like guineas to help to control the tick population - they have voracious bug appetites.
Their eggs are a tear drop shape -

We can use the bug relief. We don't get fleas, but the dogs around here suffer ticks. (I don't have one, but remember the tales.)

I know I'm late, but tell your niece that these are the birds that she will be eating one of next week lol. These are turkeys, wild ones from what I read in the last response. I know that turkeys will fly short distances, and have heard that they do roam around certain areas of the country, but I would never want to meet up with one. I have heard that they are a little territorial and like to peck at people that get too close lol!

I live in a smallish city, called Prescott Arizona. What on Earth are wild turkeys doing cruising in the city unless they're escapees of some sort?

Oops! Opinionated little birds then.

I was once cornered by a chicken myself. This rooster decided he did not want me in the backyard of my Mother's friend, so he went after me. I tripped and fell, and used the soles of my shoes to defend myself from that sharp beak.

I dunno. I think they are Turkeys. I have never lived in an area that had them roaming around or escaping lol. I just know that these birds look a lot like peacocks when they are still alive and not sitting on someone's table. I can't stand them because I was goosed by one when I was young; minding my own business but I guess standing too close to one of them in the Cincinnati Zoo.
