Is Billy's transformation amazing or what?

In the book Scruples, by Judith Krantz, Billy Ikehorn went from an overweight social outcast among her own family to a beautiful,accomplished woman who was envied instead of being pitied. Was it just the air in France, or her French benefactor's strictness?
