Do you find the heart as an appropriate symbol for love?

The heart is a hollow muscular organ whose sole function is to pump blood all over the body. It was Aristotle who first studied it and correlated it to emotions of humans and animals. However he was wrong, we could never love with our heart and thats a fact. Emotions are just the reactions of our different organs to the hormones secreted by the different endocrine glands in the body, the hypothalamus being the master of it. As a biology teacher, saying "love with the heart" is a form of intellectual dishonesty. And i always correct my students whenever i hear the phrase love with the heart and always find myself in an arguement, and always end up saying, "dont make yourself ignorant." Whats your side on this topic?

As for people relating love with a human being's heart, personally i do not care, i know its not really related it is with the brain that send signals to what we will feel but then atleast i know what is the truth and if i hear people relate it with love i also do not care, it is a more appropriate symbol for love rather that us using the brain..the shape of the brain lol... and i do not think it is bad to be ignorant once in a while, there is no reason to be pissed of about it

Haha thats true, however during discussions in class or with other colleagues we mention many things, its not being pissed off but for the sake of education, ignorance should be a thing of the past, small things matter nowadays, did you know that ignorance can kill sometimes, it is also the source of all superstitions. Happy posting.

Hello kens, I'm sorry I might belong to the ignorant (lol) you're right with all you've said, maybe this is related to the Valentine where the people's heart were hit by cupid with his arrow, by then love was felt as a result heart was then become the symbol of love. or is it the other way around the belief that heart is a symbol of love came first that's why valentine was related to it...Whatever, am sorry, Sir I just want to participate in the discussion of your topic...(smile)

Well the ignorant thing is common, we all go through it the moment we are born, but we learn, thats why we go to school. Love is a wonderful thing, and everytime we feel it, the heart is the first organ to react because somewhere in our body needs a lot of supply of oxygen. This is the basis of the first biologists and philosophers during the days where science is still built up from notions and superstitions in making it the symbol of love. Whatever is the symbol, as long as we know its essence, and celebrate it everyday in our lives, we can gladly say "I'm ignorant but i'm in love" , that will feel good. happy posting bing.

Of course you're right, but who cares? I do not think it is so important to identify where love comes from as it is important to love. I personally believe that love is not a physical thing, but that the body responds well to it, including the heart. Love is expansive and pervasive, and feels really good. I cannot think of a symbol that would capture the essence of that. Can you?

That is true, physiologically our body organs respods to hormones, the heart is only for pumping blood because its made up of muscles. Beliefs out of ignorance ussually gives rise to symbols and superstitions. Its true love feels good, it is also true that love is an emotion that is similar to hatred, or woriiedness, or sadness and happiness. We just interpret it differently. For me I really not fond of giving symbols. I just show it with actions.

i'm just curious, what would you want to symbolize love? stars are symbolized as a circle with five rays but it doesn't really have five rays. it's just a circular body in the galaxy composed of hot gases and what-nots, right?

well with reagrds to the stars its true that theyre just spherical burning bodies, stars are drawn with different number of rays, i personally don't know where they get the symbol of five ray star, and david's star is six rays. I dont paint stars that way when i draw or paint, i stick to realism. happy posting

well i would suggest a circle, it has no broken lines, the heart is taken from the shape of the ventricles, its not even a complete human heart. i dont really know if youd agree, aside from the heart what do you think is a good symbol.
