How can people abuse their animals?

I don't understand it; why do people have to abuse animals? It is just plain cruel, especially when the pet is innocent and has done nothing wrong, except be there for your company. I love my dogs and I could never imigine abusing them. People have pets for company and to pets are always there for there owners. So tell me what you think. Why do people abuse their pets when it is so wrong?
