One of the many urban myths highlight the fact that is more usual for a man than for a woman to cheat on his/her partner. Most of the times, male infidelity seems to be related - according to these myths - with the different levels of emotional involvement in a relationship, more specifically - males being more supperficial.
A list of reasons why men cheat, is however tributary to the gender framework used to compile it.
Male view on male infidelity:
- because monogamy is just a social utopia, there are no such beings as monogamous mammals in nature; the necessity to reproduce with any/a better looking available partner is our genes
- because cheating is a good way to boost your personal ego
- because we can
Female view on male infidelity:
- because men are supperficial pigs, as%$%^&&, bas£%$£, etc
- because they are imature
- because they fallen out of love
But, let's get back to our topic: Why do women cheat?
I only found some reasons that could supperficially explain women's infidelity:
- revenge/payback for past wrongs of one/many of the individuals analyzed in the above paragraph
- because her partner made her feel neglected, underappreciated, not respected, ignored
- because her partner is not offering her emotional and/or physical support
- because women have the right to unleash their inner sexuality
Anyway, this is just a speculative list. But Why do women really cheat?

I have known some women who are cheating their husband and as far as my observation is concern, the main reason is that the husband works as a truck driver and who is not home often and this I do know whatever their relationship whenever the husband is home so, with unsatisfied wife, she end up having a relationship with the hubby of her friend!
But, I know it depends really on the woman, if she is a cheater she is really a cheater since I have known a lot of women also who are far from their husband but they are very resourceful on how they are going to use their idle time just to remain faithful to their husband!

Checapricorn, the cheater is a specific species. I'm still not sure after your answer if women are cheating less or more, or at least they are better in covering their tracks. Cheating the husband with his best friend, might bring up some dramatic aspects, or can lead to some dramatic conflicts.
