saying i" love you"

Good day, fellow myLotters!Is it usual for a guy friend say "I love you" to his girl buddy? My guy friend told me that through a text message.... The other night I had a text conversation with this guy. We've talked about a lot of things until my cellphone battery got drained. The next day, I got his message that he sent the other night that states: "goodnight, thank you for the messages i love you." I replied to him and I told him that he might have a sent me a wrong message. He replied and said that it was really meant for me. His message goes: "It's meant for you for you, i love you with the love of the lord." (This guy had a plan of courting me, but he didn't pursue because I had a boyfriend at that time) Please give me your honest opinion especially those guys whom I know can relate to this topic very well..
