Have you ever purchased computer equipment from the Dollar Store before?

I was in need of a computer microphone for a particular application. I was considering purchasing a Koss SB-45 headset. I was looking on Amazon.com where they are selling them for a decent price at roughly $28, but I decided to look around to see if I could make do with a cheaper alternative. After scowering online, I couldn't find anything with a good review comparable to the Koss SB-45 headset. While doing some grocery shopping, I decided to check out the dollar store to see what they had to offer. I ended up being quite surprised. It turns out that this particular dollar store had an electronics and computers section. Now mind you, you won't find RAM, CPUs, HDDs or anything that significant there, but the did have headsets and microphones. I purchased a computer microphone (CHATEAU CM-001) for $2. I brought it home, plugged it in, adjusted a few settings in Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel and Voila! It worked like a charm and the quality isn't that bad especially for two dollars.
Have you ever purchased electronics or computer equipment from the Dollar Store? What's your best find?

I do a lot of shopping at my local dollar store, but I would never buy electronics there, or anything else that I needed to actually work. The only thing I ever tried was a phone cord, and the plug didn't work properly. All that stuff comes from China and is very poorly made. If you don't mind poor quality, and don't mind having to replace it long before you'd replace something more expensive, then I guess it's okay.

Yeah, I understand your sentiment. Not all dollar stores are created equal though. The quality of the stores can vary greatly. I have several dollar stores in my immediate area alone. The one where I purchased the microphone offers products for more than one dollar too. I think that it goes up to five dollars. Anyway, some of the items that this dollar store carries are better than what you could find at Wal-Mart for a fraction of the price. Almost everything sold in North America is completely or partially manufactured in China or the developing world. What you have described about your dollar store is how I feel about Wal-Mart or some other department stores. Oftentimes I have purchased items from those stores just to have them fall apart or fail quickly. I usually shop online or at specialty stores for main items and only venture into department stores for small items now. Surprisingly, I check Home Depot first before going to department stores because sometimes they have the exact same products without the specific labeling for much cheaper (i.e. $25 poorly made thin steel bike locks in department stores != $10 thicker and better made u-locks @ Home Depot). I have a few trusted dollar stores as well that I check before I step foot in a department store. The PC microphone that I purchased was manufactured in China for a Canadian company. It works perfectly fine for what I need it for and was much cheaper than similar Chinese products being sold at Computer Stores.
I'll post back here if it breaks down. So far, so good. :)
