Are over- the-counter drugs really safe?

Most of us rely on this drugs, specially when we felt a slight pain in our head, stomach and other parts of our body...we took aspirins and some pain relievers without even consulting the doctor if this is safe for us. we are just relying on the package directions that it is really a pain reliever, not knowing what are the side effects on that drugs. Is this safe for us or not? what are your views on this matter?
