This story brings tears to my eyes. http://www.myfoxtwincities.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7909168&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=3.2.1 Investigators found many Petland puppies come from massive commercial breeders in Missouri and other Midwestern states, where hundreds of breeding dogs are “packed into cramped, barren cages — often for their entire lives, with no socialization, exercise or human interaction.” Now I hope that something is done with these stores and especially the breeders whom sell dogs and store them in such conditoons. It sadden my sopul to hear of this especially so close to home. What is your takle on this and other "puppy mills" selling to latge chains like Petland? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Grandpa Bob.. I hope you don't mind if I don't look at the link...It breaks my heart to no end...and I can't believe people can be so cruel.. How would they like to be put in a cage and left to suffer? My heart aches so bad when I come across these stories...

No problem at all. This is so sad that it is allowed to go on for so long as well. We just had some more puppy mills closed down here last August as well now more are back. Unreal. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I hate puppy mills and don't approve of breeding dogs, though I know it won't stop because people want a certain breed..But as someone who had a champion Dalmatian, (not from a puppy mill, from a breeder with lots of yard to run around in), and now I have a White German Shepherd, (only because she was a stray), my first dog being a mutt not only was healthier, but easier to train and well behaved..So if I had it my way, I would stop all puppy mills and ban full bred dogs, because this is what causes puppy mills, the demand for a full blooded dog which is really no better than a mutt...

Yes lamb, I say shut the stores down then there would not be the place to buy them. One can go to a reputable breeder and see the surroundings this way if they wish a good full breed dog etc. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am shocked to hear this about "PetLand" shame on them, they have to know where these animals are coming from. Those poor animals.

I was a little surprised about Petland too, Howard, since as you and I both know we have a Petland in our neck of the woods and I do go to it....fortunately our Petland doesn't sell puppies (or kittens), but makes you also wonder just HOW they get their birds as well..are there bird mills as well????? I've known though for a long time in general how almost all major pet stores do get their puppies from puppy mills and done articles about this

Thats a sad story to read...We breed dogs but we only do it maybe every two years or so, we had a dog that just had puppies last Sat. the 15th. But we take good care of them, in fact the puppies and the mother are in the house, already spoiled. We will probably sell them when they get older, but only to people we know that will take care of them. I know of a place in Missouri that I think have too many dogs, but I'm not naming names, they have dogs everywhere, in fact they got accused of being a puppy mill but they have every kind of dog you can think of. They are nice people, but we quit associating with them because of the way they ran their place down there, their dogs seemed happy to me tho. I think that people who do this kind of thing should be punished for it, its sad, dogs are supposed to be man's best friend, and they are if you treat them right.

Some of these "puppy mills" have 20 pair or more of dogs for breeding. Then the puppies are piled into small cages till sold etc. Unreal anyone could do this just for money. Unreal. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Yes, it is unreal, don't know how someone could do that and feel good about it. Like I said, this place I know, they probably had about that many dogs for breeding too, they had dogs everywhere, not one place on their property didn't have a dog on it. I don't even know if the dogs ever got any exercise or not. Its sad..

We have Huimane Socity in each county for the protection of animals and all. But they can't be everywhere all at the same time is the problem. This investigation took too long in my eyes as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

That really is sad. Those poor pups and dogs, some people are evil. It goes on here also, but a lot of those mills are being shut down thank goodness. I think tuffer penalties for keeping animals this way would work, 'like life in jail'. These people are awful. Just money grabbing monsters.

The greed/need for money makes people do the stupidest things. I say send them to jail. Place them in a jail cell, a really small jail cell, with 20 others so they know/experience a cramped cage. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I would never adopt a pet from a pet store unless I could be assured that the animals aren't from a mill. My former sister-in-law, before she married my brother, worked in a pet store. I worked with her to place a litter if kittens that a cat I had find homes.

A few years ago my cousin applied for a job at one of the big pet stores but, by the time she was called for an interview, found out they bought from puppy mills, so declined the job.

I think you know by now GRANDPA BOB what an animal rights activist I am, and unfortunately I've known about puppy mills for a long, long time. While this investigation by HSUS has singled out Petland, the truth is almost ALL major pet stores that sell puppies (and kittens as there are kitten mills too) get their dogs from puppy mills. Even privately run petshops, have been investigated and they too get their dogs from puppy mills also. I remember hearing of one very exclusive, fancy smanchy pet store in Beverly Hills the same pet store someone like Paris Hilton might get her puppies from, got their puppies from the mills also. Luckily more and more of these mills are being shut down. I don't know if it was passed yet in my state but there was a bill proposed to make puppy mills illegal here in NY. Now if more and more states would pass laws like this, the puppy mills would go out of business...once and for all. The only thing someone like me can suggest is if more people wrote to their political leaders and urge them to propose and pass bills in their own state to make puppy mills illegal in each and every state.

PS I saw your comment about pet stores not knowing if they got the puppies they sell from puppy mills. Some genuinely don't know, while others lie through their teeth just to make a profit...the case I talked about, the Beverly Hills pet shop knew full well they were getting puppies from puppy mills but would lie to there customers that they were getting the puppies from top certified breeders..bull doo-doo

That is so sad. I think the people who run the puppy mills and the breeders if they are aware of the puppy mills and also the store if they know what is going on need to go to jail and serve time and some hefty fines. I am not familiar with Petland but do know about PetSmart, we have that one here. The PetSmart here brings in dogs and cats at certain times that are up for adoption from the Humane Society. I can't stand abusers.

I think they should all be fined in great magnitude...and maybe even shut down. What a disgrace. I have always said the greed is a mental illness....and if they would do that to innocent little puppies and dogs...they are sick!

When my mom first heard of puppy mills and things like that she swore off buying any animal at a pet store other than fish. I'm not a dog person, I prefer cats, but every cat I own was a rescue of some sort. Either found abandoned outside, or adopted from a shelter. The oldest was my mom's and I adopted him after she passed, but he was once rescued by her.

I get really upset about puppy mills. I could never think of treating an animal like that. Theys till have feelings and should be able to live like they are not just bugs. I treat my dogs very well, if I was not living with my parents, they would even be allowed to lay with me on the couch when I am watching tv. I truly view my dog, Lucky as my child, I take care of him and love him so much. It just angers and saddens me that smeone would treat animals that poorly.

I wasn't aware such places existed. And I am saddened to learn they exist. It is awful that they have to live like that no freedom, no love,no playing, I think places like that should be fined for the treatment of the dogs. They should be cramped up like that with no exercise. If we at home did that we would be charged with cruelty to animals so why should they get away with it?

My two miniature pinschers - My male miniature pinscher is Max. He is 3 years old and a chocolate rust color. My female is Daisy who is a 6 yr old (or older...not sure) red miniature pinscher.
I hate puppymills and backyard breeders. My female miniature pinscher came from something like that. She still goes around in circles from being caged up alot. espically when she gets excited or someone she doesn't know comes in or near the yard. She doe snot jump either. As she never learned. She is to old now and the vet said something about the way her joints developed she never will. It is sad thing. But if you look at her now you would never be able to tell. The worse part was she was breed over and over to produce show quality pups that sold for 1,500 to 2000 bucks. I made she she got fixed. So, she never has to go through that again. She has a fenced in back yard with free range. She also have free range through out my house. As well, as my male miniature pinscher. But he was bought from a repatuble breeder. I have added a picture of my two miniature pinschers.

I have read a lot of stories about puppy farms. It is really disheartening and put in bad lights all serious breeders and dog lovers. It is a golden rule for breeders to verify whom they are going to sell first. Buyers have to ensure that their peet is not coming from a puppy farm. It is better to contact your kennel club and they can direct you to serious breeders. Buying from a breeder might be expensive. But serious breeders have their breed and dogs at heart. They only breed from sound dogs and thus it will save you money on vets later on. A sick puppy will be difficult to grow in a healthy dog. So the initial investment in your puppy will be beneficial even financially in the long run.

I didn't even bother reading the link as I've heard these stories before. I feel sad for the critters that come from these places. When I was younger I used to think that the pups at petland got exercised daily or at least put into larger pens at night so that they weren't left in such a cramped area. Of course that wasn't the case. And to top it off they sell these pets for a ridiculous amount, even more than a reputable breeder charges. So most of these pups just sit and get bigger while their "home" gets smaller... I knew of a couple of Petland stores in the area, but they closed down several years ago. I was shocked to hear over the radio the other day that a new one was opening up in the area. I couldn't believe what I heard, so I looked up petland and sure enough a new one did open up. It's the only one in California. With a lot of people against this store, I don't think it's going to last long.

I think that people that run puppy mills should be prosecuted and convicted of animal cruelty and sentenced to live at least a year like the animals they tortured. I'd say life but the courts would never do that. They wouldn't even make them spend a week like that. It's not "humane", it'd be cruel and unusual punishment. BULLCRAP!!! I'd sooner shoot the jerks where they stand. I would never buy from a pet store, I go to the pound or rescue societies.

It just makes me so mad to see people mistreating animals for profit. And yes, the large chain pet stores have to know the volume they buy can't be produced at such a low price as they pay. What is really sad is these dogs are pure bred. That kind of dog is prone all kinds of health problems if not treated properly. I didn't check out the link, but I've seen documentaries before where they show the cages with wire bottoms and up off the ground, so they don't have to clean the cages. The dogs paws would be bleeding from walking on the wire. They didn't even provide any bedding. Sickening!
