What do you do when someone gives up on you?

I had this friend; I mean we were acquainted but I didn't really think of him as a friend before. Even if we saw each other often, and he would tease me sometimes, I didn't think we were friends. And I didn't pay much attention to him or his attention, just let it go over my head and ignored him.
And then for a long time I didn't see him. He didn't come to our regular meetings. And I realized I missed him and his teasing. When he finally came back he seemed withdrawn, barely saw me and didn't even talk to me. After all that time that I had missed him and eagerly wanted to talk to him, and he didn't even notice me.
What do you think I should do? Should I just go up to him and ask him what is wrong? That would sound so strange after months of ignoring him. What would you do when someone gives up on you?

I had a very good friend that went to the same class as me for about three years. We were practically best friends as we talked all the time and knew each other for years. However, two years ago she moved away to Canada. =(
We said that we would talk on MSN even though we were in different countries and e-mail each other all the time. We did this for about seven months (which actually isn't that bad as we were in different time zones and had other obligations), but last month she just stopped talking to me and starting conversations. Every time I had spoken to her, she talked about her other friends and it wasn't long before we wouldn't talk at all.
I'm the type of person that doesn't like talking to people when they give up on me, so I didn't really try reasoning with her, even though I know it's probably better to do so. Maybe you should talk with your friend and tell him that you miss him, he'll probably tell you the problem if there is one. I hope things work out. ^_^
