Democrats and the Draft.

One of the accusations that were always made by Congressional Democrats was that Prs. Bush was going to reinstate the draft. One of many empty accusations with no basis in reality. The irony (or is it hypocrisy) is, one of Obama's plans is to reinstate the draft. No, not the military draft, but something that is exactly the same thing, and just as wrong headed and unconstitutional. Prs. Elect Obama and his Chief of Staff have both talked about plans to establish basic training camps where 18-25 year olds would be required to spend 3 months learning their version of patriotism and civil defense. They would then be required to do community service for no pay or benefits... something that goes even further than a military draft. The big question here would be why would it require cloisering off our youth and young adults in the camps? What do this kind of living conditions have to do with training to help in emergency situations? I have worked on many disaster recovery missions. In each case there were thousands of volunteers ready, willing and able to help where they could. Yes, there are things that Emergency Management needs to teach the public about what they should and shouldn't do when showing up to an disaster scene to help. However, none of those things would require 3 months of indoctrination. There has never been a disaster scene where Americans didn't show up to volunteer. In fact, the problem isn't not enough volunteers as much as too many. Obama and Emanuel are talking about fixing a problem that doesn't exist. Which makes me wonder what problem they are really wanting to address with this draft. Is it that too many Americans aren't buying into their anti freedom, anti Constitutional policies? Is it that they fear that 53% of the popular vote means that there are too many people in America who still think for themselves? There is nothing honorable, honest, ethical, constitutional or anyting else good about this plan. It's sad that Obama and his Chief of Staff resent freedom for others so much that they are willing to bring back slavery.

Do you have any links to where you obtained this information because I can't seem to find anything about it on Obama's website or elsewhere on the web. I do know that he plans to increase the available slots for Americorps and the Peace Corp but those increases aren't large enough to include every American within the age group you specified. It seems to me that if there were plans afoot to intercept high school grads before they entered college, the news would be covering this for a number of reasons...not the least of which would be the outcry from universities and community colleges who survive mainly on the tuitions students pay. I really would like more information...if you have it.

"It's time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service. ... Here's how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They'll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we're hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities' most pressing needs." ~ Rahm Emanuel. http://www.examiner.com/x-536-Civil-Liberties-Examiner~y2008m11d6-Obamas-chief-of-staff-choice-favors-compulsory-universal-service

When you choose the leaders, you choose the direction of the group.

These quotes are from a two year old book that Emanuel co-authored with someone else, it's nowhere close to being policy nor even being reviewed at this time. The following from the article beneath the quote is an extremely weak connection linking Obama's ideas about community service hours and Emanuel's boot camp idea: As chief of staff, Emanuel will not be in a position to directly introduce public policy, but his enthusiasm for compulsory service, combined with Barack Obama's own plan to require high school students to perform 50 hours of government-approved service, suggest an unfortunate direction for the new administration. In my opinion, unless more valid information is forthcoming, this is much ado about nothing.

It seems that what is good for the Democrats is not good for the Republicans. We had the same problem here in Canada, the Liberals could raise taxes and cut benefits, but not the Conservative. AS for the base training camps, and the three months, it sounds more like indoctrination and turning out Hitl- I mean Obamanites then getting people to help in disasters. The States already have means to deal with disasters, volunteers, and firemen, etc. So the real purpose is not so that if there was a great disaster like a major fire or an earthquake, there will be the unemployed youth or teaching them a lesson, but to get as many saying "Hail Obama" and also putting down the dissenters. It is not the three months, it is the method behind it.

True Suspenseful, we already have an infrastructure in place for responding to disasters, which leads one to wonder what the real purpose of these camps really is.

Mechanic, true there is indoctrination involved in military training. Indocrination that helps change a normally peaceful individual into a soldier, airman, marine or sailor. But none of the training or indoctrination in the military teaches a person to be liberal, conservative or any other political persuasion. Since we already have the facilities to train people in disaster mitigation, preparation, reponse and recovery, what ligitimate purpose could these plans serve?

I have never been a perponetent of those "new world order" conspiricies. But, the more I learn and discover, about the current administration, past administrations and the incomming one, the more i begin to wonder. Perhaps those people I discounted and dismissed as paranoid "conspiricy theorists", may have been on to a grain or two of truth. I kept watching video after video of perported "FEMA camps" and laughed as i debunked one suposed location after another, especialy the 2 that were suposed to be near me, because they were nothing more than patches of dirt with ruins of old WWII pow camps. I may go back and watch more on it, check out other locations and listen a little more with a little more of an open mind. Ted, do you have a link to this plan of his? I could use the information, I want to add the information to my collection. It may come in handy.

I still don't give much credence to the FEMA camp thing, nor to most of the conspiracies, but this sounds a lot like what the FEMA camps would be. Perhaps it is the Democrats who want such totalitarianism, but they point their stinky fingers at the Republicans to divert attention. Remember Rangel, Kerry and others saying that Bush wants to bring back the draft? It never happened, in fact Bush never brought it up, but apparently Obama and his CofS does.

Interesting! I think the first attendee of the camp should probably be Obama himself!

He would never step down from his Ivory Tower long enough to do any community service that he didn't choose to do.

I don't think a lesson on patriotism (i.e respect for our national anthem and our flag) would hurt him either!
