My husband asked about our pinoy ways and sometimes my answer satisfies him, sometimes not...so please fellow noypis share your views and and answers to these whyss. 1. Why do you use umbrella when there's no rain? I told him that we already have too much sun in the philippines and that when you will be exposed in the sun for a long period of time specially during noontime, you will have a big change of getting skin cancer. The thing is to prevent sun wrinkles and cancer. Well, he doesnt understand what i am saying until he spend the whole day in the hot summer sun of enchanted kingdom. he said he's like being fried! so from then on he bought us an umbrella which we use each time we go out especially after 10 am when the sun is glaring hot. 2. Why do you run when it rains? why do you cover your head when it rains? Do you think the rain will make you sick? I told him that we dont want to get wet in the rain becuase we dont have heater like US houses have to warm us up and our showers are cold which will make us sick too. But i dont have an answer as to why we cover our heads. 3. Why do you get sick when it weather changes from sunny to rainy when there's no significant drop in the temperature? well, all i know is that when it always rains, people do get sick. there's something in the air or rain..i dont know. i have to search for it. that's all for now guys..i hope you'll share ideas soon :)

What is the nationality of your husband... question number 1 and number 2 are very common to a lot of nationalities... like Filipinos are not the only ones who use the umbrella when it is hot... i know Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, and even Europeans do this... With question number two... i think it is pretty much understandable why people get sick because of the sudden change in weather since temperature is not the only significant factor that should be considered... Question number three is so common with all people... just watch international movies... they also cover their head when it rains... they also run... I wonder why your husband is asking such questions that can be answered by simple common sense... no offense meant...

he is an american..but almost people he knew only use umbrella when it rains. they dont go around anywhere with an umbrella on a sunny day. well, that's the movies. he just dont understand why we give special treatment to the head. so what are the factors other than temperature that makes a person sick?

Well, strong wind usually carry virus from other people who are sick to those who are not... immediate change in temperature can sometime weaken the body's immune system... then after being under the sun the whole afternoon... then get wet at night... that would surely make a person sick...

It depends. Not everyone uses the umbrellar in the rain! Some people may stay at some place rather than run in it. Plus, you might be fit as a fiddle. Thus, it is hard for you to to get sick anyway! Have a nice life!

as for question #1: i've been asked that before. since im currently in the mideast, there's no rain here. if there are, its extremely seldom. Locals see most filipinos especially during summer to use umbrella. we just tell them, the sun's rays are excruciating to the skin. we just want to protect it from the UV rays. question #2: we notice that too. basically, when we were young, our parents put hats or face towels in our heads whenever we go out at night, saying that the dew might get into our scalp or something, which might make us (the children, the babies) sick. (mahamugan). we unconsciously take it until we grow up, thinking that the rain my sit to our scalp and makes us sick. another thing, you can tell your husbands that we're GREMLINS and when we get wet, we'll multiply.... JOKE! . you can also tell him that we're cats and we're afraid of getting wet! JOKE! question #3: i always get sick when the climate change, be it from summer to fall or winter to summer. it maybe that viruses can adapt to the sudden change in weather and our bodies cannot easily adapt to the season change which makes us vulnerable to sickness. that's just for me, since i work in the hospital, i've noticed that there is always an epidemic of viral infections during the change in season.

you already answered all your questions. I guess you already told him the reasons well. your answers are accepted. if he cant accept those answers, just tell him we are filipinos and that's the way it is. its just like asking him question like why you have bread for lunch and dinner and not rice? why chips are part of your daily meals? every culture has their own ways.

Answer #1: Let's face it Filipino women don't want to get any tanner that's why they use umbrellas when it's sunny. In the Philippines fairer is prettier like snowhite. I don't use umbrella though under the sun because I hardly get vitamin D in me so I really don't care but I do wear sunglasses and usually apply SPF15 facial lotion to protect my skin from getting more freckles. agh! Answer #2: I don't really run when it rains...I just walk faster. lol It's mainly because I'm wearing glasses and I just hate it when my glasses get wet and have to wipe them with my shirt tails. I tend to cover my head when it rains but it's actually my hair I'm trying to protect. I don't like getting my hair wet by the raindrops especially when I just flat ironed it. I just don't want it to get ruined so leave me alone. If I had 20/20 vision and was totally bald I couldn't care less of the pouring rain. Answer #3: Oh that is so given. I easily get sick too once the weather changes from sunny, to rainy, to cold, to windy. There's nothing we can do about it but try to protect ourselves from getting sick. People's immune system are not all good and strong. The air quality is not mighty clean because of what men does to our environment so this shouldn't even be asked by your husband. Tell him it's totally normal. Here's what you should ask your husband: "Want some balut?"

Tell your husband that umbrella was invented to cover us from the heat of the sun and from rainy days. Europeans are unmbrella fanatic, just look at the British royal family, bringing umbrella is their lasting custom, I always see Prince Charles and Prince William carrying umbrella even attending official royal engagements.Umbrella protect us from cold and being sick. It is also advisable now that we have something to cover because too much exposure to the sun can cause skin disease and cancer plus premature aging. We run when it rains of course so as not to get wet and to avoid being sick. We have to cover our head during rains because based on ancient belief that when the center point of our head is exposed to rain there's a good chance we might get flu, cold and fever. Rain can make us sick, I think it is a common knowledge, especially if your immune system is super weak. The weather change can make us sick because of the cycle in the ecosystem. As the water evaporates and carried to the atmosphere, pollution and other chemicals mixed in the atmosphere, the gathered water will form into clouds and eventually rain which pour into the earth, sometimes the fluctuation of climate from sunny to rainy trigger the sensitivity of our health as this can cause unwanted small and tiny particles of germs which can be transmitted to our body triggering sickness. Oh God, did I say it right?your husband can make us crazy with his questioning.hehehehe.LOL!

Here is my opinion... 1. In a tropical country like ours, where the sun is really hot, standing under direct sunlight can cause headaches. Umbrellas are used to protect our head from the sun and not really from the heat. 2. For some reason, elders have been telling us to always protect our head first. its ok if your back or legs get wet in the rain but if your head gets wet, you will most probably end up sick in bed. 3. I don't think its about the temperature but the fact that when you are exposed to the heat then it rains then it stops, then the sun shines on you again, your body is unable to adjust to being hot, then cold then hot again. its more of the sudden change of weather and the frequency of the changes.

It really has to do with your husband not culturally literate about the Philippines or the Filipino ways. So, it is nice that he was asking you about some of the things he noticed about us Pinoys. Maybe, next time he asks you about Pinoy's peculiar habits, you should also ask him back with this simple question: "Why not?"

americans don't use umbrellas when its hot. the only americans you will see carry around an umbrella when its not raining are the rich ones. and they have people to hold it for them. the rain one seems like common sense to me. i don't know why he would ask that. maybe he lives somewhere that it doesn't rain much.
