The American Legion, in my town, voted me as Chaplain. Now that was a surprise.

All I do is read the prayers at each meeting. Since I read outloud well, I was voted for that post. Luckily it has nothing to do with being religious or religion. Have you ever been voted into a position before? Was it a surprise? Did you like the position in the organization you received? Did it turn out to be more, less, or the same amount of work as you thought it would be? Were you happy with it? What organizations have you belonged to and what positions (or posts) have you held?

Congrats!!! I have heard of the American Legion, but don't know really what it is about, but that is cool, you got voted as Chaplain..Does this mean that the members come to you with problems or something like that??

I've already started. We just got our American Legion Catelog today in the mail. There is a pin and many prayers and readings I could buy. Only the pin for Chaplains is different. It's a cross unless the Chaplain or the Legion is Jewish. All the prayers are non-denominational. Readings choice between Christian or Jewish. So far, just reading. Since anyone can be voted to the post and there is no criteria (besides the person being a good person who tries to uphold Americanism), I don't think my duties extend beyond readings. Take care.

Hey, congrats on your Chaplain position at the American Legion. That's pretty cool. Hm, I'm trying to think...I think I was voted into a position on a social service/domestic violence board--I was a Co-Chair of the Board (another person and I shared the top position as we were both very busy people at the time). I was also the Secretary of a newly established state Compulsive Gambling board at one time. Both positions were quite a bit of work and I knew they would be. I was glad I held both positions as I learned so much. But, I sure was glad to be done with them. I also held a position in an Employee Assistance Program Association several years ago. It was alot of note-taking and typing up reports. Your chaplain position sounds a lot more enjoyable...

Since I just have to lead people in prayers that I read and read excerts or passages given to me, much easier than anything I ever did before. I was on the Board of an Independent Living Center before. Gambling and Social Service sounds interesting and a lot of hard work. The ILC, I mostly voted on policy, insurance, proposals, etc. I was supposed to be on the hunt for a new building committee, but my Mother got cancer and I never had time to look for anything and I resigned. Take care

There is a American Legion just around the corner where I live but I really never got to join. The biggest surprise I got was when I was voted Vice President in our union. I am a very soft spoken person but maybe my thoughts about labor rights made me accept the position. It is good to be recognized sometimes.

Wow! Vice President of the Union. That's pretty excellent. What were your duties?
