Traditional education vs. Progressive Education

Are you for traditional education, or a more progressive one? I think that a lot of times, things are taken too much to extremes. I believe that there should be a middle ground that uses ideas and theories from both sides. What do you think? Which do you think is more effective? Why? Which do you think is better for the kids...? For those who don't know what these are, here's a general example of each: traditional: Kids are given a list of words to memorize. They are tests on spelling at the end of the week. progressive: The teacher brings in something fun (and educational) for the kids to do, and they have a discussion about it, then draw pictures about what they learned. As you can see, there are pros and cons for both..
