Technology is killing the family

I believe the recent advances in technology have seriously impacted on the family. The internet ,video games, computer ,DVD'S and television has replaced important family rituals such as family time and eating at the dinner table. No longer are children willing to sit and talk with their families ,they prefer instead to talk with their friends on their cellphones ,watch DVDs in their room (some homes have a television in each room),surf the internet,or play video games.Gone are the day when families sat down and talked around the fireplace and tell stories ,everyone seems to have something more interesting to do in their room.In addtion some parents are so busy ,the only time they see their children is when they are leaving for school or when they go to th bathroom.Consequently the time for inculcating the right values in the children is severely reduced. No wonder so many children are in trouble and parents dont know because they rarely interact with their children.Kids could be abusing drugs, engaged in criminal activities and pregnant and still many parents wouldnt know. What are your views ?

It might seem like that but there are plenty of us who buck the trend,we have always entertained our son ourselves. we do buy him the games wii ,playstation and all that sort of thing but that is used on rainy days or if he needs time to himself or we are tired, we still get the chess board and games out not as much as we used to as he is fifteen.I do agree with you that some parents cannot be bothered, or are too wrapped up in themselves ,jobs ect and it is a shame for the child and the adult.Parents being busy is no reason for not setting special time aside each day to talk to their children and find out what is going on in their lives. They think chucking money at the children is enough, but society has shown children need time and attention what ever their age,in fact my son needs just as much attention as a two year old at the moment, exam stress, voice breaking you are a bloke you know what I mean. The main problem is not the credit crunch that is just an excuse my dad worked over sixty hours a week every week and my mum worked on the fields but they always insisted we sat together as a family for our evening meal and sundays were spent together as a family either going to my nans or together somewhere it was the rules, and that is whats missing today.

My daughter is only 2 so maybe this doesn't really apply to me, but I'll take a stab at it. We incorporate technology into our lives. Right now, the DVD and tv are the best educational aids we have in our home. She has learned her colors, numbers, alphabet, many "sight words" and sign language through DVD's. Oftentimes, I watch them with her and we interact around the program. She recently had a tv put in her room so mommy can watch non-preschool programs and keep her sanity. We only have DVD's and videos though, I don't like commercials and excessive propoganda. We got on MySpace Karyoke a couple nights ago and sang with the alphabet song and other children's favorites. She doesn't really know them yet, so it's going to be a while before she's really singing. She has a Dora video game, that's teaching her to count and problem solve. Basically, in our home, technology is a tool, as it should be. When she gets older, she will not get a cell phone. Happy MyLotting!

I'm really happy to find you taking care of your children's lives. I'm a child here in China keeping playing computer games for years without any caring from my parents. all they do is just call me out to have dinners and say nothing about my well being, that's the reason why I have been playing that boring things for years, because I have nothing to say to them,it has come to my mind that the reason why your children have been like me maybe because they're ignored somehow since the time you're busy with something else, and from what you said and worry about seems you're a responsible mum,it's not late to do a good mother, wish you best regards

I agree that it seems that technology really is taking over and destroying the family setup! However, this doesn't apply to me as I live as an independent! I love computers and I love technology. I guess no one sits and eats around the dinner table anymore, this is a sad state of affairs! I'm sure that there are some families that do this but, it's probably few and far between! Let's look at technology in a positive light too though! The world is a much smaller place due to the advancements in technology. I for one hope to live long enough to see the future advances in technology! I think that things are going to become very exciting for us all! Andrew

Nowadays technology is everywhere. And it is creating a gap between family relationships. In most cases they spend more time in front of the internet, like what we did here fellow MyLotters. Because of the technology we spend less time with our family and loved ones. Some of the people would check if their friends online are okay, and what are they doing but they didn't even ask their children how they were doing. More people are embracing technology rather than spending quality time with their family, or parents, or children.
