Ancient music for my novel

I am writing a novel, and part of it is when the hero hears a bard tells a saga in a singing manner. So I went to look at the mode music of the Greeks since that would be probably as to how he would tell it, sort of like a Gregorian chant but older. My church uses the ancient Greek modes as well, and I find the study very interesting. And I do love Bach. So I got to thinking of when someone writes a fantasy, or a book based on ancient times, do they make up their own songs and music, or do they borrow from what they consider would be appropriate for the period?

you would have to be a song writter too to do that. I do think some borrow songs to fit but then others find some one to write new music for them.

I would say they do both. Or a mixture at atleast, that is what I would try to do so that it would match a novel I would be writing. Well good luck and happy writing.

I think that one can do both. A lot of people like to make up their own because that makes the fantasy more of a fantasy, but others like to put a touch of the real times into the books so the fantasy will still be a fantasy, but will be a more accurate portrayal of the time period in which it supposedly took place.

I did find a site about ancient Roman music and it is something like the modes we sing in our church. So I will try to make up some pieces (you know in case they make it into a movie.) but I might need someone who took more music theory than I learn when I took my piano lessons years ago.

Not being very musical, I have never done anything like that. I do like to see it done, in the correct style, when I read a book, even if the writer makes up song/story, after all what do we know of what has been lost? I'm more of a story teller and once was working on a story and I wrote a story to set it up. When I read this to a group of writers they wanted to know why I was reading them a historial thing to them. I told them I had made it up and they were surprised!
