Rats as pets

What do you think about keeping rats as pets? I have a friend who has a lot of rats and loves them.

Rats are great pets they are very clean and DON`T smell at all we have about ten adults and twenty new babies all designated for snake food

Rat - I could never own a rat as a pet, I wouldn't sleep again!!
Having a rat as a pet would not be for me lol...I would never sleep again.

I have always wanted to keep one as a pet but, I've always been told by my parents that they are dirty and have diseases. I will, however, be getting one when i get into an apartment which will be happening in like three or four months. What are some things I should know before I take on this responsibility? (any help is greatly appriciated)
