I am doing a little holiday cleaning so I pulled out the old vacuum cleaner so that I could do the living room carpet and the vacuum smelled a little musty this is what I did to get the smell out and it really worked I am going to share this with you all: You can correct this simply by adding the following to the dust bag or cup before you vacuum: a fabric softener sheet, or a cotton ball moistened with a bit of your favorite essential oil, like lemon or cinnamon. I used the lemon oil. I like the lemony smell. Happy Holiday cleaning.

I usually sprinkle baking soda on my carpet here and there before vacuuming. I think cinnamon is a great idea and might try that. I love the smell of cinnamon and nutmeg in holiday cooking.

I sprinkle baking soda on my carpet too. And I could have put some in the vacuum but I wanted to do something different.

If you put it on the carpet, then you DID put it in the vacuum.

I will give this one a try.. I don't have to vacuum very often as we have hardwood floors with only one area rug in the living room but with a dog we have to vacuum it more often than I care to.. My vacuum cleaner gets very smelly at times even though it is one of those that are bagless.. I used to put the powder that you sprinkle on the floors in the cup to freshen things up but it has a too strong smell and I don't like to do this anymore as it overpowers everything.. I am going to try the lemon and I may try a cotton ball soaked in Downey also, I put that in my carpet cleaner when I clean the area rug and it makes everything smell so good.. Great tip..

Hey chevee! That sounds like a very good idea! So all you need to do is just to stick it into the bag? I never thought of doing that! I think it makes sense! It should give everything a nice smell! I like the smell of lemon too! I think I will try that the next time I go to vacumn.

Hi Chevee. Thank you so much for sharing this. I have that musty smell too when I vacuum. I used to think it was from the dogs or the carpet. But since I've been in my new house and have new carpet, the dog doesn't come in except in the laundry room when it's really cold. So I think it's the vacuum cleaner itself. I'll give that a try. Thank you for your tip.
