Glaciers on Mars

As we find out more about Mars, the more it resembles to Earth. If Phoenix probe had found ice at a small distance of Martian soil surface, new data obtained by Mars Orbiter seem to indicate that on Mars are real glaciers. One glacier seems to have a thickness of at least 800 meters. Why is this discovery so important ? If there is ice, there is also water :P...and in any project to make Mars a living planet, this water is vital. What do you think?

That is true but you also need to add an atmosphere that is warm enough to stop the water freezing again. They have believed for years that there were glaciers and that there would be running water if the atmosphere was warm enough. Now they have evidence to back up their beliefs of two poles like earth has with enough ice to have lakes and rivers again if they can warm it enough. Sounds fascinating. Maybe they will one day terraform it.

I Agreed the water is vital component on all living part in this earth. But having water doesn't mean that ancient or primitive living form has been there in mars. A lot of factor to make anorganic to form be an ornanic. I my opinion because the atmosphere condition in mars cannot support living form like in the earth. The atmosphre is to thin than earth. May be million years ago, water has been in the surface. With water there it easier for human to live there. this very amazing.

That is quite true. We have no way of knowing if the atmosphere has always been as it is or if it was once more like Earth. I may have some life or at least be capable of supporting life if the atmosphere could be thickened and the planet's temperature warmed.

it was been talk even before if we (humans) can live in other planet. my answer perhaps we can but it would cause a million or perhaps a trillion of money and time for making such exploration and research and make a new planet became inhabitant. i guess some of our worlds scientist continuing on researched. about mars that could be a source of proving that their could be life or life exist on that planet.

Assuming this glacier is ice = solidified water, this lends credence to the belief that Mars might have been once an inhabited planet. It needs to be probed how this glacier of ice(water) has been left behind. Why there is no atmosphere. Waa it due to rape of the environment and hence an unbridled increase of polutants, that was responsible for some disaster on Mars; that somehow it has been made to go through an ice age? Is it certain that the ice is not some dry-ice?
