Why do we say these things? When did they originate and by whom?
Do you ever wonder why we say certain things? I know we say them out of habit because we've heard them from our parents, other relatives, friends and acquaintances but, have you ever stopped and really thought about them?
One that I've had trouble with is "I couldn't care less" because another version of this same thing, with the same meaning is, "I COULD care less." These statements are really the exact opposite, yet we use them to mean the exact same thing. Personally, I use "I couldn't care less" because it makes more sense in the context to which it is applied.
Do you have any other sayings such as these that you use? Please share, I'd love to hear them!

That's so true! Even I use I COULDN'T CARE LESS. But there have been times when I had real messy time with such usage. Just give me some time, I will get back. Poor memory - need to whet it.

Hahahaha! That's one of the more important reasons that I come to myLot every day. It helps my memory and helps me to focus. I have "brain fog" from fibromyalgia and have noticed that, since becoming a member of myLot, my memory has actually improved! Oh, I do other things, too, like playing memory games on the computer and things like that, but myLot really has helped.
I hope you get yours back real soon!

Hahahaha...
Mylot is amazing with all weirdos and sane people around you just cannot be less active and dull. But I have to get over this "brain fog". Getting it more often lately. I love to play memory games and Sudoku. May be, need to do it more often.

Sane? Nah, no sanity here! All I'm saying is that myLot helps me to keep at least one toe on the ground while the rest of me is flying around.

Hahahahaha! That word, sh*t, is used in so many different ways it's funny! I mean, it can be 'as hot as sh*t' or 'as cold as sh*t'. LOL Obviously, that is one extremely universal word!
I never heard that "talking cotton" phrase. I suppose that all little 'groups' like that have their own sayings. I know that there is no way I'll ever understand Ebonics!

haha ebonics i can understand.. country? nope.. no clue.. im from florida and i wasnt around country people till i was dragged up to TN and then i was convinced i was in the twilight zone.. then i got a job where half if not more of the plant were country people that didnt like city people and it was insane.. i had nothing in common with them since they were raised on farms, cooked, had tons of kids..
im a city girl.. cant cook and is not a kid person.. lol.. it was like night and day.. took awhile to fit in because i guess i stuck out like a sore thumb with being raised wearing short shorts and tank tops and they all dressed way conservative.. but i can pretty much get along with anyone as long as they give me a chance..

Stupid is as stupid does has always puzzled me. I can halfway understand the others. I never heard the one of the dog and the bone before. I'm sure there are hundreds of them, if not thousands, that I've never heard.

I remember reading something about this. It was a long time ago.
Lets break it down one at a time.
It is raining cats and dogs
There is no definitive origin for this particular phase.
It has got something to do with with the pets of the god of rain and the form which witches take. And witches ride like the wind on their broom sticks.
So, people of the old times, then use these phases like dogs to refer to rain from the rain gods, and cats to refer to the way witches ride like the wind.
Therefore the phase cats and dogs being referred to strong winds and heavy rains.
I couldn't care less
Well, from what I interpret it, when you say "I could care less", gramatically, you are caring, and you can care less than what you are currently caring.
When you say "I counldn't care less", it means that there is no lesser to care for you cannot go beyond not caring in the first place.

Whatever is one that is most often used. I think it means I couldn't care less also.
Another one is Don't hate, that one means you are jealous.
Duh is another one that one I think means you have done or said something stupid.
I get these saying from the younger crowd.

Whenever I've heard people say 'Whatever!' it's usually because they're having a disagreement with someone and they know that other person is right and they are wrong. Because they don't want to acknowledge that the other person is correct, out pops "Whatever!" Maybe it's jealousy.

when a dog gets sick he vomits all over the place so to express that is what a human is doing we say sick as a dog,
raining cats and dogs came from back in medieval england. They didn't allow their cats and dogs in the house and they had thatched roofs on their house. The cats and dogs used to sleep on the roofs. But when it starting to rain and the roofs got wet they were very slippery and the dogs and cats would fall off and hence, it looked like it was raining cats and dogs.

I've heard 'sick as a dog' and 'raining cats and dogs' all my life! I guess they are handed down from generation to generation. I have heard 'fat as a hog', 'full as a tick' (NOT very full, right), 'green as grass', 'crazy as an old wet hen', 'have you lost your marbles?' (meaning crazy!). I have to admit I use 'I could care less'.
