student means a person who has the energy to seek knowledge on any subject and tries his level best to get maximum knowledge from that specific subject.

I'm going to have to quote a dictionary to answer this question as I don't know how to describe it in my own words, sorry. xD
Student = A learner who is enrolled in an educational institution.
To me, "student" is really used for anyone who is learning.
