Do you do futures ad options tradign on the stock exchanges?

i have been tradign on the stock exchange for awhile but i have never really understood or indulged in 'Futures and options' trading. I wonder if it is better than the noromal selling and buying of shares and if it is more beneficial. I woudl liek to start futures and options trading. Can anyone throw soem light on it and how i can gain more by this method of trading.
