I have an old Pentium III pc at home with 256 mb of sdram. I am trying to install XP on it but an error occur during installation. I tried windows 2000 but I experienced the same problem. I install windows 98 and it goes well. What happened? Is there something wrong with my pc or something wrong with my installation?

What is the error your getting? I had the same problem (would not install) only this was on a p2 466 celeron system. I had to go and locate some drivers for it, in order for it to work. Giving us the error will help

Reset the Bios and format the system using NTFS FILE SYSTEM instead of FAT OR NTFS QUICK then try to install most probably it will go through if still it doesnt check your hard drive for bad sectors

and make sure that you are not installing it from within the operating system but you are booting from the cd and then trying to do that

The spec that you have is sufficient to install XP. I have had PCs with lower specs and yet still capable of running XP. Personally I would not use NTFS on an old computer. I have a start up disk which I use to troubleshoot certain aspects of a PC system, Other than what has been mentioned above, have you checked your CD drive? It may still be working but is no longer 100% perfect when it comes to reading CDs. I faced this situation and used a newer CD drive. The CD installer you use may have suffered some form of damage. It may be just a tiny scratch or an imperceptible deterioration.

Is that your only computer? if not you could use that machine to try Linux. If you want to install windows, even thought it's enough you should install Windows 2000, it'll be much faster.
