More and more FLASH based applications are appearing on the Internet. Most of them are cool and useful but they can be a pain if you're still on the traditional dial-up internet connection. I'm just wondering whether you, as a regular internet user, are okay with such application? If yes, what kind of FLASH application would interest you the most? Example of flash - youtube uses some, volkswagen, etc.

The very reason why flash has emerged itself the advantages it has over traditional gif animation. Smaller animations/banners today required for all the websites. Flash can give much better appearance and much better performance. It's light weight compare to gif animations. Now a days everyone loves to watch videos over internet. Who hates youtube or dailymotion kind of sites. Flash is been the behind the scenes for the huge success of such websites. I feel for dial-up users it's not just flash will make their experience slower.

I think it is very important to know what and when to use flash. There are some sites which I've been to, those don't require FLASH. They actually put the entire static site into a FLASH application, which slows down a lot. If there's no interactivity, then there's no use for FLASH.

I am a full time flash based professional only for the past 6 years. I agree using flash for static contents doesn't makes sense. Flash having it's uniqueness and it's good for animated contents, interactivity, gaming, video few more such things.

Cool! I'm actually a J2EE web app developer, but I'm looking at Flex and AIR. I feel these 2 are going to be pretty famous later on. :D

I think there are just too many these days. They are even being used for pics which I think is a real waste of bandwith and causes undue problems for Internet users. It seems like every month or so they are wanting you to download a new version of some flash something or another. It is a pain.

Flickr also uses Flash. You're right. But if there's a requirement for you to download later FLASH, it is because of your browser. Supposedly, the flash player version doesn't get increment that much. Flash player 10 will always be flash player 10 and will remain so for many months. I face this issue sometimes too, but it's quite a small problem.

No I mean when some site uses a new version and want me to update to it inorder to be able to play a vid or something. I get tired of having to do updates or being bugged about it. I have been burned many times in the past when an update version was not as good as an older version or had bugs.

Yeah, I do like flash-based web applications, they are nice and animated. But you are right, if the internet connection is slow, then it's a pain to load the site. That's why some websites do provide HTML version too.

Yeap, the award winning FLASH applications are those with a mixture of HTML and Flash.

I am using 256 kbps unlimited bandwidth connections. As for me I was not okay with flash sites as they take much time even I had enough speed. They are placing too much images and videos in their sites. When it comes to youtube, they are using flv format transmission to view their videos. It takes low bandwidth when compared to other formats. It was good. But when it comes to flash sites, they are designing entire web site in flash only. These sites takes long time to load even for a broadband user. Thank you.

To be honest, a good flash site is not 100% flash. Look at Flickr and Youtube, only part of them are in Flash. Those with 100% flash site will somehow slow down the entire thing including the browser.
