I must just say I am running Fedora 10 on my Thinkpad for almost a week now and have been quite impressed by it over other distributions and previous versions. It is simply a breeze to install, configure, and manage. I am still undecided between Fedora and Ubuntu for now, but I think the race is close enough to make it a matter of personal preference. I work as a systems administrator currently, and this operating system is one of the best for getting the job done! It really does get out of your way and let you admin servers and systems without interruptions from stupid notification messages, blue screens, or that damn focus stealing I hate so much. Fedora allows me to focus, and with more than one workspace I can get more done in less time. When you work on Linux servers, there is nothing like running a Linux desktop for compatibility and comfort. So, yes! My experience has been good so far. Certainly better than my last experience with Fedora 8 (although that was older and slower hardware), and obviously better than my experience with Vista thus far too! I have had both installed for basically the same period of time and if it wasn't for the fact that all the extra buttons and features just work in Vista, I probably wouldn't use it at all! Go for it, try Fedora 10! It will be worth your time, trust me ;)

Thanks for your reply and i completely agree with you. In my case i am using it more as a desktop rather than a server. It detected all my hardware out of the box and there is very little configuration i did to make it work as per my needs. Take care.

Nice to hear that. I took it for a test run on my VMware virtual machine as well as on my old laptop. It detected all my hardware too out of the box so almost no configuration required from the user's part. Take care.

I am assuming that you are using Livecd of fedora, Please download the entire DVD ISO image and then verify. We do use livecds to check our hardware compatibility with the Linux distribution and just to check the feel of using it. All the additional necessary software like ( Fonts, Device drivers) are available in the DVD image . In my case it has detected all my hardware out of the box. Do let me know how things go ahead on your end. Take care.

Upgrade process can be performed via various methods , it could be done locally (with CD/DVD)or it could be even done over the network with tools called "YUM". For yum one got to have an active broadband connection. For all the details about upgrading existing fedora version to latest fedora 10 please refer the following link:: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f10/en_US/ch-upgrading-system.html DO let me know how the process went. Take care.

Fedora has an option of installing over the network so if you dont have a cdrom conncted to your machine still youe could install fedora. Please read the Install instructions on the fedora main web site.

Thanks! I've always wanted to get into Linux. I tried in high school but couldn't get passed the fact it wasn't Windows and I've been using a Mac for years now. I want to build a PC. Soon. Maybe this will be the way to go instead of paying for Windows.
