How do you keep your dog still when giving him a bath?

I've been wondering this because my dog is so scared of taking a bath that I have to resort to force and pull her so I can give her a bath. She won't even keep still, making every bathing session feel like I'm jogging down the oval in the sports center. I could see other dogs keep still when being given a bath though. I'm worried because mine is still basically a puppy, and she's already quite powerful. I want to know how to teach her not to be afraid of baths so she won't be a handful when she grows older and more powerful. Any thoughts on this? Cheers~

well i have had many dogs...some liked taking baths and some just dint....the ones who dint... i used to chain them up near the bathing area and justlet the water flow around their feet for a while till they get used to it....then slowly i zstart splashing water on them as a game and they start enjoyin it.... and finally they get used to the water and the temperature in case its cold and then the real bath comes... :) worked for me as all my dogs have been labs.... so it depends on what dogs u have and their tempraments and upbringing so all the best to u.... but finally if nothin is working then get used to having a bath with ur dog!!

I already used to the last suggestion lol. We both take a bath outside together. Just shows that I love her that much lol. Some of your suggestions won't work on her. The sight of the pail of water and bucket makes her want to run away but I always chain her early on.

My dog really likes taking bath, as she likes to play with water. The only headache we have is, she likes to play with water while taking bath. So, we have to use a chain to tie her up while bathing her. Will putting her in a bathtub for bath help to comfort her? Or let her play with some toys while bathing her?

She's already associated the bathroom with bath and gets scared. She's a big one, I can't bring her inside and I don't have much space outside the house for a bath-tub. I do chain her but I don't like pulling too hard on her leash for fear I might strangle her unintentionally. Cheers~

Our pet dogs are used to taking baths in the morning. They have been taking baths since they were just puppies. And now they are no longer afraid of taking baths, even if the weather is rainy or just simply cold. I find it amazing that our dogs love to take a bath when others do not really enjoy taking a bath and gets dirty again within five minutes. Our pet dogs are really pampered and we'd love them to stay with us longer to have some pets to take them to bath. I miss them already!

Good for you. This pup of mine has been scared of baths ever since she was barely a month old. What happened to your dogs? You're not at home?

Well,I tie him in a leash but he is steady whenever I give him a bath.He follows me wherever I go.Then I wet myself as well for both of us to enjoy the water.

Well, that's the one thing we can't avoid when giving a dog a bath. We all get wet with that, even if the dog keeps still. Mine seems to like sticking really close to me and squirming when wet so I'd get wet myself. Cheers~

That's funny! Unfortunately, I'm the only male in this house and the only one capable of holding this doggie down. Well, she identifies to me. But she still is a b*tch literally when being given a bath.

Good thing my dogs are used to taking bath regularly so they are behaved whenever they take bath. I don't know if you will believe me or not, but we let them decide if they want to take a bath or not. We show them the water and if they want or they are ready to take bath then they come to us. You may try giving them toys while taking bath so they will behave or you may also try to give them rewards after taking bath.

That's interesting. Hmmm, I'll see if I could get her some treats to eat after taking a bath. It might take a while but I guess my dog could associate bath with treats! Nice idea. I forgot about that. Thanks!

You have to make it a good experience for her..Use treats to entice her not pull and force her...Slowly and she will eventually get used to it...make sure water is nice and warm and water dosnt get into her ears...

I guess I'm guilty about pulling her and forcing her to take a bath. Lol. Cheers~

Spank him gently on the butt. LOL! Cruel. Just kiddin'... Most dogs naturally dislike to take a bath--thanks to their mammalian instinct. Nevertheless, what I did with my puppy was I literally talk to him to get used to his morning bathing ritual (and spank him very gently when hr gets out of my grip). Now, he usually "volunteers" to take a bath in the morning (only once in every 3 days). What a good dog?!

Wow, that's a good dog. I'm still researching how to train mine to get used to the idea. I do talk to her while giving her a bath, it works for a while before she starts squirming again because she doesn't want to take abath.

My dog has never given me any trouble taking a bath. I guess because we gave her her first bath at 5 weeks old and it has been a regular routine ever since. How old is your puppy? Maybe they will get used to it with time. Make sure you don't get water in their ears or soap in their eyes. Anything that would traumatize them about bath time.

She's 7 months old. I've always been careful about not pouring water suddenly on her head because even I as a kid didn't like that. I found this dog wandering on the street when she was about a month old or less. Happy mylotting!

My dog, Gluteus, used to hate bathing. He used to bite me whenever I would pick him up for a bath. So what I usually do when its time for Glutes to take a bath, I would cover his head with a blanket or a big towel then he would not resist. When we are in the bathroom, I would caress him and make him calm down before wetting him. Then when he is calm, I begin giving him a bath. Then some treats afterwards. Another way I also used to do whenever I tell him to take a bath and he would run away, I would just ignore him. Whenever he tries to hug me or kiss me or come near me, I ignore him and tell him that he stinks and no hugs until he takes a bath. It works for my dog. Now, my dog goes to the bathroom on his own and waits. You can probably try humming or if your dog has a favorite toy, you can let him hold it while you give him a bath.

Humming? That's a new one. Is it effective? Come to think of it,she has a ball she plays with when she was little. I'll try using it in her next bathing session.

my doggie is actually used to take a bath everyday. previously i used to wrap it with a towel and then unwrap it on a tumb.. :P but now it has become used to bathing. infact every morning at his bathing hour he licks my feet reminding me about his bathing time. and i am glad that he has taken his training so well. atleast he no longer bugs me for a bath. In fact you can use my tactics. wrap it in a towel, take it to the bath tub filled with water and unwrap it there. I am sure he will be actually taking bath like a good boy after a couple of such training... and yes, do clean his ears after bath.. all the best...!!

Wrapping her in a towel might be a good idea. I think I'll take everyone's advices about treats seriously as well. Cheers~

Is your dog too big to fit in the shower with you? I have a blind rat terrier who hates baths, but as long as I have her closed in the shower, she's not too bad. If you get the shower head that has a cord so you can hold it and spray her to bathe her that may be easier. Just turn the water off once she's wet, apply soap, then rinse. Hope this helps. Good luck!

It's not that she won't fit, I have to lift her up because there is a knee-high division between the toilet and the shower area. I can't lift her up anymore because she's heavy and powerful. But I might try to get a makeshift shower to use for her outside the house.
