Are Auto Workers Loyal to the Company They Work For?

Have you ever driven by a Auto Manufacturing company and noticed the differenct brands of cars driven by the workers? Why shouldn't a plant worker who works for Ford, GM or Chrysler drive the product that he builds. Isn't he proud of his skill and workmanship? Doesn't he realize that the paycheck that he brings home is signed by the company that works for? That paycheck feeds the family, buys new clothing, pays the mortgage or rent, pays for the children's schooling and buys the luxuries that they desire. Living close to St. Louis, I have driven by the Ford and Chrysler plants. I notice that there are several different brands of cars on the parking lot. Does Toyota or Honda give that worker a special discount when buying a car? I think not! Does the worker believe that his workmanship doesn't come up to the quality of those foreign cars? Now we learn that another plant in St. Louis will be shutting down on January the 1st and the production will be moved to a plant in Canada. The workers paycheck just flew away, now he has to find another job, and that isn't a very easy thing to do in this economy. Maybe he will be able to flip hamburgers at McDonalds'. I have a friend who purchased a Toyota about 3 months ago. She had always driven GM products and had previously commented that she loved her Buick. She drove a lot of miles, got good gas mileage and the car road very comfortably. She bragged that she had owned 3 Buicks up to that time and never had any problems with them. Then one day, I saw her driving her new Toyota, and I asked her why had she purchased a Toyota instead of a new Buick. Her comment was that someone told her the Toyota was the best car on the market today. There aren't any Toyota dealers in her town, or close by. She may change her mind if or when she needs to have it serviced. What do you think the answer is, why do you think that worker drives a brand that he doesn't make?

Well there are definitely various factors involved. For one you should take into consideration whether they may have owned the car before getting their job. When my wife and I were car shopping she always asked the salesman what they drove. One Toyota salesman drove a Hyundai. He said that he bought it when he used to work for Hyundai. When she asked him if anyone there expects him to drive a Toyota he just said he would if they could offer him anywhere near as good a deal as he got on his Hyundai. Either way he believed in the product he was selling, he was just satisfied with what he already had going into that job. As for the people building them, it does concern me that they don't want a piece of their own craftsmanship. I build computers and I think I would have to have a poor opinion of my own work to buy a Dell or Compaq. Granted, I build those myself, in car factories there are many people involved.

Part of it may have to do with price. Even with an employee discount (and not all are eligible for that) domestic vehicles are usually more expensive than foreign vehicles. Some just want to save money, and not just on the purchase but the actual replacement price of the vehicle influences how much insurance you pay and depending on which state you live in, additional taxes such as for example an annual vehicle tax. For some it might be reliability. The big 3 have a problem with that in their vehicles. They finally, albeit a bit too late, strived for improvements in that area. Keep in mind, these people see what goes into these cars. They see what material is used, how well things are put together, etc. You do have a good point in that they should take pride in their work. But keep in mind, since it's an assembly line, one worker doesn't put together the entire car. If you put in a door all day or a seat or whatever part, you probably know that you can trust your own workmanship, but what's with the others? There is always some slacker where people don't trust that the work was really done right... Another point concerning pride is, if the plant produces lets say trucks, but the worker only needs a sedan.. he/she never sees that vehicle produced. Can't exactly take much pride in the product other than in the brand maybe. IMO, it's very telling if the majority of vehicles in a car manufacturers parking lot is produced by another car manufacturer.... As to the Toyota. They have received high ratings in the past and have been very reliable. We have a plant nearby, and the vast majority of employees there drives a Toyota. As to servicing the vehicle.... we don't have ours serviced at the dealer. That's not necessary. Any mechanic can service the vehicle. It's usually cheaper, too. In fact, most of the work on our vehicles has been done at a Midas. They do all kinds of routine stuff one needs to get done on a car.

I guess, as everyone has mentioned, there could be a number of reasons why they wouldn't drive a vehicle made by the company that employs them, but you would think that, eventually, they would switch over and purchase one. It usually comes down to where they can get the better deal - money talks! I see that you have said you are near St. Louis - have there been a lot of layoffs from Anheuser-Busch since the InBev buyout?

Good morning newtondak, I hope you are having a great Thanksgiving. We are about to leave for my grand daughters and I will probably "pig out" on turkey again. As far as the brewery is concerned, I understand that some people have left but I can't tell you a number. I know that many people in St. Louis are very upset about the deal and afraid that the charity money they received in the past will be shut off. As for the auto industry, I'm afraid the workers "have bitten the hand that feeds them". Have a great holiday season, we will have a new president taking over soon and it is everyones hope and prayer that things will turn around for our nation and these troubled times will be past us. I am trying to be very positive and feel that we have been given "Hope" that we seemed to have lost. Go with peace.

Question: I see that you and others have made many comments and posts on this board. Are any of you making any money doing it. I see that I made 7 cents yesterday. Woo Hoo, that really turns me on?????

I had heard the InBev doesn't believe in having their own IT department - they always outsource - and that all of AB's IT department was cut. I usually reach the minimum payout in a month, but that's as far as I have gotten - I don't have any referrals or I could probably make more.
