Is this the Thanksgiving Effect?

First of all Happy Thanksgiving to all American myLotters! I just had a look at my myLot digest, and I was shocked and confused to find that where there is usually a long page full of discussions from my interests, (so far there has always been more than 10), this morning there are only three!!! At first I assumed that myLot must be having a few problems, or maybe my interests have "fallen off", but then it struck me that perhaps it's because all the American myLotters were celebrating Thanksgiving yesterday and so weren't on myLot. Could this really make such a difference? Are the majority of people here from the US? And do all Americans celebrate Thanksgiving? If you're American, did Thanksgiving mean that you've were myLotting a lot less than usual yesterday? Hopefully this discussion will help me solve the mystery of the missing posts...

My family was definitely celebrating Thanksgiving on yesterday. So I only came on for a few minutes last night to wind down. If like many people that I know Thanksgiving is really a 3 day event at minimum. The way that I have it figured is that most people start on Wednesday preparing to cook. Thursday cooking, eating and socialize with family, some visiting from out of state or country. Also checking out the newspaper for sales. And then finally Black Friday. Also there are a lot of people that travel at this time of year. So I don't expect that many people to check in regularly until Monday. Time will tell.

Ah, thanks for that. You've given me an idea of the whole Thanksgiving schedule and the scale of this holiday! It sounds even bigger than I thought it was, and it sounds like really good fun; quite similar to the way people prepare for and celebrate Christmas here. I've got another question now. What's Black Friday? Sounds like the Thanksgiving effect might be behind it after all... I hope you enjoy the rest of the celebrations and the sales

Ah, thanks a lot for the information, I've never heard of that before! I suppose in one way it's nice to have an official start-date for your Christmas shopping; maybe it helps to focus your attention and get you organised! However, it also sounds completely crazy, especially the example in the article that you posted. Wow, poor guy! I think that I would probably make a real effort to stay out of the shops on that day . But if you hit the shops today then I hope you had a good time and managed to get some good bargains!

All Americans celebrate Thanksgiving but only recently has the day after been referred to as black Friday. I actually hate the term and you wouldn't catch me out there fighting amongst the other shoppers.

Thanks for your reply, and your Thanksgiving wishes. Actually I'm not American, but never mind!

Although Thanksgiving began as a way for the early american settlers (the pilgrims) to celebrate and give thanks to God for all that He had done for them, it is really not considered a religious holiday but rather an original American holiday. I don't believe that I have ever met a fellow American who does not celebrate Thanksgiving. Those who have no families are often treated to dinners at shelters, churches, or other charities.
