I watched the movie Candyman, and I wanted to know what the people thought....

I saw this movie this morning. And first off, have you seen this movie? If you have, I wanted to know, when Virgina Madsen came from out of the fire, did they realize that she was trying to save the baby? Because the mom and residents came to stop by at her funeral. The little boy dropped a hook on her casket. The same hook that she used to try to kill Candyman with. Candyman was in the fire with her. He was engulfed into flames. So, when the residents saw the hook, the little boy said Candyman. And everyone came towards the area where she was inside trying to rescue the baby. The residents took gasoline and lit the sticks with fire. Did they not know that Virginia Madsen was inside of the closed area? When she came out of the fire burned, it looked as if she was rescuing the infant. Did they realize that she was, or did they think that she was trying to kill the baby or kidnap it. Because in one of the scenes of the movie, she was accused of cutting the child's head off and they were trying to find the body of the baby. She was thrown into jail for this.
