trouble getting my labradors back!! HELP !!

i had two labrador retreivers who i loved very much and due to personal reasons i had to give them up and dint want to sell them...so i contacted a friend of mine who is a dog lover herself and told her about my situation and she helped me by referring me to a person whom her fathr knew very well and i met in person and went over to hand him the dogs and told him to take good care of them and that i would call time to time to ask about them..... suddenly one day after a few months when things were cool on my side i decided to call her and ask her about them and asked her if the man would be willing to give them back to me but i had no problems if he didnt want to give them back as i know that you tend to get attached to such loving dogs and that it would be wrong on my part to do so...the next day morning she called me up telling me the dogs were very sick and the next day after that she called to tell me that both of them had passed away.... me believing my friend cried day in and day out for the next couple of days and finally when i got over it i realised that this was not possible as my dogs were never diagnosed with any disease and were perfectly healthy. so i decided to go to the bottom of this and found out who the vet was for my dogs (which she herself told me) and so i spoke to him after things cooled down a bit..... and he told me point blank that the dogs were absolutely fine and was himself shocked at the way these people had behaved and hurt me and told me that i was most welcome to take the dogs away from such a person. now i really dont know what to do. please advice !!
