Do you ever think you forgot to turn off the stove?

Or lock the door or water the dogs? Do you turn around and go back to see if you've done those things? Thanksgiving day I went to my dad's house but halfway there I had to turn around and go 12 miles back to my house because I couldn't remember if I had turned the stove off after I made breakfast. I had, but my memory didn't register it. I usually keep a pad of paper by the door and write "oven off-stove off-dogs watered" or such things then carry it with me so I don't have to turn around and go back. But Thursday I forgot to do that and it was so frustrating. Am I losing my mind or do other people do this?

Haha.. Water the dogs... No, I never *knock on wood* have forgotten any of that before.. Usually turning the stove off is just by habit. Be careful though.. My mom and dad (they were drunk of course) forgot they were cooking, passed out, and the house basically burnt down halfway about 8 years ago. It's one thing if you forget to make your bed one morning or something small like that, but anything that could have really bad consequences should be taken very seriously and your number one priority. Good luck, and don't worry too much or too little!

Oh my, I hope your parents were okay! I stopped excessive drinking when I was in my 20's, I was quite the party girl but realized I wasn't really having that good a time. I really never do forget the dogs' water, I'm just so afraid that I will that I have that checklist. I'm 54 and have noticed that I forget little things. I guess it's the fear of what will happen that prompts these little moments of panic, because I never really forget--I'm just afraid that I will!

It is such a horrible feeling when that happens, I have left the house a few times and then wondered if I left such and such a thing on because I cannot remember turning it off. I have never left the house and left the oven on although I have often forgot to turn it off when I am in the house which is annoying!

When my mom was here this summer, I came home a couple of times to find the oven or a stove burner on from when she made lunch or cooked something for dinner. I've done that a couple of times myself and it's scary. Not to mention the money it costs!

Yeah it is both scary and expensive, now I make sure I turn it off as soon as the food is cooked and I am going to dish up that way I never forget!

I got distracted by a television show years ago, after I started heating some oil to fry some tortillas. I ran to the kitchen and found a fire from the pan licking the cabinets above. Silly me, I tried to move the pan to the sink. Without any gloves (it was a cast iron skillet) I had to put it down on the linoleum floor that of course that got burned, leaving a black circle in the middle of the floor. As well as second degree burns on my hands. By the way, one is not supposed to use water on grease fires. In my case the easy solution would be to take another pan the same size or bigger and cover it, smothering the fire. A CO2 fire extinguisher is also good, but don't spray too close from the side! The burning oil will spread all over. It's best to fire it off at a distance, aiming above the flames so that the gas will go down on it.

Oh, that must have hurt for a long time! I hope your hands didn't get damaged! I keep a big box of baking soda beside my stove in case of a fire. I did have one years ago and the baking soda did a very good job. Easy to clean up, too. I'm very glad your fire wasn't worse! We are so absentminded sometimes!

I always have to double (and sometimes triple) check to make sure these things are done. LOL Here's one of my favorites, though it didn't happen to me personally. My aunt and uncle had left to go somewhere (a trip, I think). When they were almost to their destination my aunt asks her husband "Did you remember to close the garage door?" I have to wonder what made my aunt decide to ask my uncle at that point at not before, though I'm guessing she didn't think about it until then. Was it closed? Nope. My uncle lost a brand new tool chest (one of those big fancy ones) because of it.

Oh, no! That's a shame to lose such a nice tool chest. As I was telling someone else, I rented a house where the garage door would sometimes roll back up or not close. I got in the habit of sitting there and making sure it was shut and didn't roll back up. I still wait in the alley till my garage door closes completely and stays there. A good habit to have--once a leaf got in the way of the electric eye and I had to get out and fix it; if I'd driven off it would've been open all day.

I do things like this all the time. I'll get half way to work and start wondering if I turned the stove off or unplugged the hair straightener! Sometimes I end of even turning around to check, but it everything is always fine! Better safe than sorry I guess!

I'm not obsessive about the toilet since urine is sterile and I'm trying to save on my water bill. But I always look in one of the front bedrooms thinking I didn't close the window a few weeks ago when it was nice outside!

I do it all the time, but usually I just get out of the driveway. I also do a checklist before leaving the house. I do have a habit of leaving the stove or oven on after cooking. My husband has gotten to the point, he checks it after supper. I think it is more trying to get the food on the table and just carry it off and don't turn it off lol. I don't think you are losing your mind.

Thanks! I remember how it was trying to get everything on the table for a hungry family and timing it so that everything was the same temperature. No wonder you forget to turn off the stove! Thanks for the reassurance!

I forget so many typical simple things as of late. A couple years ago I was making bread pudding from scratch. I cubed up some day old bread. Spread them on a cookie sheet. Placed them in a 200 degree overn. A few hours later the house stunk. Going into the kitchen I opened the oven. Hahahaha! I had black burnt crumbs, no bread in sight. I have turned around after a few miles not knwoing if my door was locked recently as well. Not losing your mind, just your memory.

I decided to have hash browns the other day and got engrossed in cleaning the bathroom--I thought I was just going up to use the facilities. The dogs were very grateful for my forgetfulness, they just love burned hash browns! I've overbaked quite a few things myself because I get distracted. Thanks for the laugh!

The danger with gas is that the flame will go out and the gas will continue to come out. I'm glad you're okay after leaving it on! I love gas stoves, though. You can control the heat precisely, unlike an electric stove like I have.

Hey!! Oh no, you are not loosing your mind it happens with me too at time. its just hat we are pre-occupied with other thing to remember small things which come quite naturally. I used to get in the middle of the night to check if i locked the door! Well, it actually dosnt matter we are just being cautious!! prevention is always better than cure, right?

Your grandmother was forgetful but you are young and there is no reason you should not be using the stove. You mother was wise to tell your grandmother to stop cooking--we should all know our limitations but sometimes we don't.

Hi there... you are not alone!!! I am just as bad. I always worry whether I locked stuff, turned things off, plugged out appliances etc. Most of the time the only way I will remember that I have done stuff is to say what I have done out loud immediately after doing it. Otherwise I can't remember and it drives me crazy!!!!

I've tried saying those things aloud as you do but then I ask myself if I'm remembering what I said the day before! Nice to know that I'm not alone! I forgot to lock the front door a few times but nothing ever happened, thank God. I live in an urban neighborhood but people here are hard-working and the crime rate is very low.

this has hapenned to me a couple of times before. Once, a couple minutes after leaving, I drove back to my house just to check that I had close the garage door, which I was. I think this happens to a lot of people around the world every day, specially with every day activities.

I never worry about the garage door--I rented a house with a garage door that worked sporadically so I had to sit there to be sure it went all the way down and didn't raise back up once it got down. Even though I have a great garage door now, I sit there in the alley until it hits the ground and stays there. It's just habit, and one less thing I have to turn around and go home worried about!

I do that all of the time, and it is so frustrating. I try to make a habit just like you to make sure the stove is turned off, the cats have food and water etc. when I leave the house. I have left the house and then start to think whether or not I turned the stove off, I have a habit of turning the dial on simmer and forgetting to turn it completely off. I do that with the iron as well, leave home, then try to rememember if I unpluged the iron. It really is an uncomforting feeling not knowing whether these things were done or not, and of course when you go back to check everything was okay.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one! Do you think it's age or just insecurity? I'm 54 and notice that my short term memory isn't what it used to be--or is my confidence just waning? Getting old ain't for sissies!
