How to communicated with girls?

I have been a colleage student now but communicated with girl rarely.A major problem i think a few girl in my class.Only 6 girls in my class but 40 boys , so i have little chance to chatted with them ,Others my quiet manner make me shy when faced them .I always kept silence with girl because i havent some topic.Now some of my fridend begin make fun of me that a single man. Do you have some idea to teach me . Thanks very much.
