We've never been told not to use our mailbox. Why would anyone tell you that? The one thing they do say to do is have any incoming checks sent to your bank rather than to your mailbox because of chance of theft. We live on a rural road and never had a problem with stealing, but we've had lots of problems with our mailbox being knocked down. Other than that, we've never had a problem in the almost 39 years we've lived here.

Its because of personal financial and medical information that gets sent in the mail that could be used for identity theft. Also people like my self order stuff online and rent games and movies through the mail. I've never had a problem with mail theft but people who deal with theft such as the authorities say stuff like this.

I've noticed that some credit card companies are now not putting the entire number on the papers sent out, which is good. We know our number and nobody else needs to know it. What bothers me more than the mail is all of the private stuff being online, like banking and medical information. This is much more dangerous than perhaps something taken from a mailbox once in awhile. We don't have checks sent to our mailbox, so we don't worry about that.

Elmiko,
I have not quit using my mailbox. I think it's impossible for one thing. Unless of course you use a PO Box. That is a pain and inconvenient. There really isn't anything we can do to protect ourselves completely. We have no idea when someone mess with our box unless we are waiting for something specific and it never arrives. We are all vulnerable.
