welcome to singapore! well to start with singapore is really a very small country. you can get to the other end of the island and back at the airport within two hours. there is the MRT (subway/metro) at the airport which you can take to get to town. it'll take you about 45min to reach orchard road, the shopping belt of singapore. if you are more adventurous, you can take the train (transfer to another line) to get to little india or chinatown. there you will get to experience something different from the usual city life.

two to three hours is not a lot of time to spend, so i would say that if you are here for shopping, head on down to the the cluster of shopping centres around suntec city convention centre. it is a short taxi ride from the airport, and you will find lots to shop, eat, and see at the three shopping centres located at the area. it is alos quite near the esplanade, and you could head there for some alfresco dining and outdoor arts and music events.

2 - 3 hours? i don't think there is really enough time for you to fully enjoy yourself. from airport. if you take a train, you'd have to transfer at Tanah Merah Mrt (8min journey). From tanah Merah mrt sit all the way to city hall mrt (the interchange). You can alight here to shop. OR you can change train to the red line and sit to orchard road mrt. Here is the link for the train map. http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/network_map.asp And this is the time taken from each station. You'd be able to roughly gauge and plan your timing. http://www.smrt.com.sg/trains/train_timings.asp
