Did google make orkut to compete with yahoo answers? Or the other way around?

I have noticed allot of people on here talking about orkut. Which is a site the that google owns. One of the people that work for them made it and google bought it from him it's named orkut after his name Orkut Büyükkökten. I was wondering did they get this site to compete against yahoo answers. I am not sure how long yahoo answers as been around though. So I am wondering what other people think on this.
