Starring Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. This movie is one of those artsy type where if you are into film interpretation (like I am) than it is totally on your level. If you are not into film interpretation well you just might be a little lost within those two hours. The film is an adaptation from a John Irving novel "A Widow for One Year". I have not yet read this novel but d plan on it being added to my list of novels to read. It is about a fictional family where Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger play Marian and Ted Cole. They lose their two sons in an accident and due to this accident their marriage and life itself ceases to exist in any normal shape and form. The whole focus of the film is based on one summer in particular and Ted Cole hires an assistant. Ted Cole is a writer and he has lost his driver's license and basically hires the teen to drive him around to various places. It is quite obvious the movie is going to take an odd, and twisted turn immediately after the teen is brought into the family. The tone of he film fits perfectly with the toneof the family. Stuck. The title is something of an enigma as much as the characters are throughout the movie. In fact I can see two interpretations to the title in respect to the film. One is Cole has a fascination with women and as a writer he has a sense of control as a creator and an artist. He wors through his grief by sketching women in a family portrait then alone in a seductive emotional way and then he takes a twisted turn ultimtely fulfilling his grief process and then stops sketching the women. With this ideal I can see the title to reflect on his vision of women, in specific detail is wife who h become a "stone" since the accident. The other interpretation of the title can simply be the door in the floor. And this is something you will not understand until you reach the endof the film. I am eager to read Irving's novel to find out exactly which interpretion is correct, if as Cole's character said when advising the young teen on writing for an audience that the writer has a responsibility to prepare his audience or situtations. I never like to give away movies, and what I have said here is nothing compared to what a movie goier will experience watching this film. And again if you are into film interpretations than you will love it....if not. Well, it keeps you guessing. Have you seen th door in the floor? Have you read A Widow for one year?
