There have been rumors and he's hinted at the possibility himself, but now it's being reported that Chris Matthews of MSNBC's Hardball may run for the Senate in Pennsylvania against Arlen Specter in 2010. http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/chris-matthews-running-for-pennsylvania.html Matthews has reportedly negotiated with some Obama staffers and has met with Pa. Democratic Party officials about a possible run. Specter will be 80 years old in 2010 and it's unsure whether he'll be running for reelection but I'm pretty sure he said on a local radio show some months ago that he intends to do so. According to the article I linked above Matthews would start out behind in the polls, mostly due to lack of name recognition. Any thoughts? Personally, I think he'd make a great Senator. Annie

I am from PA and I really think that Pennsylvania has had enough of Arlen Spector. I think Chris Matthews would be a good choice for a senator, but I'd really have to do a bit more research before I say that I'd vote for him. I don't watch Hardball all too much.

What part of Pa. are you in? I'm in the northeastern/central area. I've always felt that as far as Republicans go Specter is a pretty good guy, at least on social issues. However, he will be 80 and he's battled cancer a few times. I'll vote for Chris if he runs. I don't always agree with what he says on his show but he's certainly knowledgeable about politics and government, he's been involved since he was very young, and he's very passionate. Annie

It sure would be an interesting race. I wonder why they do not have a retirement age for Congress, the President, and the Sumpreme Court. I would vote for Chris if I lived in PA.

It is funny they don't have a retirement age. Remember Stromm Thurmond? He celebrated his 100th birthday in the Senate! I think they literally had to prop him up in his chair sometimes. I'll never forget when they were debating some issue that went late into the night several years ago and Joe Biden stood up and said they should all agree that Thurmond could go home and go to bed and they'd send one of the Democrats home too to make it fair...lol! LMAO! I didn't know that. That's way too funny and I'm sure now that they need a retirement age.

I think he would be a very strong senator. I am not sure if his reputation for playing "hardball" is a good thing. He gives me the impression he will not give an inch if he thinks he is right and somethimes that is not a good thing.

Well, he's very passionate about what he believes in, that's for sure. I remember not too long ago he was a guest on some other show and was asked if he had any interest in running for office again. He said he'd reached the point where he figured he could make more of a difference if he were in the Senate, that politics was in his blood so much and the feeling just never went away. I had a feeling then he'd be running one day soon. Annie

I heard that a few days ago. I think he'd be a good senator, too.

I think so too and if they ever need someone to talk non-stop for a long time for a filibuster, he's their man! Annie
