Local county sells on e-bay

A central NY county is selling county property on e-bay to earn some cash. The items that the county sells vary. It can be a snow blower, office supplies even a cassette tape. That old Sheriff's radar unit doesn't have to work properly to be a gold mine. The Oneida County purchasing director says little league teams sometimes buy radars like this to check the speed of a baseball. The DA obviously confiscates a great many items through arrests and seizures and those items then can go on eBay and can receive significant amount of money back and go back into the DA's office for investigations Before turning to the World Wide Web, the county held auctions twice a year, but now finds eBay to be both lucrative and easy. Click here for the full story... http://news10now.com/content/top_stories/129164/oneida-county-cashes-in-on-ebay/Default.aspx I find this quite interesting. I think it's a great idea to be honest. It's a great way for the county to get the money it needs, and will help cut down on tax payers costs! What do you think? Should more counties and towns do this?

Why not? I think many police forces and other public sector organisations auction goods, and eBay allows them to reach the widest possible audience. My local police force in the UK held auctions of confiscated and lost property, but via their own website I believe. When I first read this discussion title, I thought you meant that the actual county had been sold on eBay!

I think it is an original idea, but I would want to see how the whole thing turned out in the end before someone else decided to do it. On the other hand, what can it hurt? It is better than doing nothing. It would be easy for them to do nothing, but maybe this will start something up for counties in similar situations.

Me being dumb, I read the article after I posted the response. I guess it turned out very well! I like the idea much more now that I understand it better. Duh me.

I think it is a pretty good idea. I think more counties should consider doing it. They can get rid of their unwanted stuff and earn some money at the same time. Cool for them that there is a link to their eBay page at the bottom of the article.

Obviously somebody is internet savvy! I think it's a great idea. Helps fill the gap due to budget cuts in these trying times. Our local Goodwill stores did the same thing when collectibles and antiques were big sellers on ebay. They did pretty well I understand.
