Well in this present world of technology which operating system u prefer will be best in the following category:-
1 Security
2 Ease of use
3 Compatibility
4 Price of linux open source
5 Prevention against virus and hackers

I prefer linux. Though some people say linux is not user friendly i dont feel that way. Currently iam using Fedora9 and Iam planning to install Ubuntu.

what about the novice who doesn't have much knowledge about linux.

In terms of security and cost, i prefer linux
but in terms of capability,access to essential softwares and tools I rather use windows over linux even though is expensive

First choice would be Macintosh. However, if you are short on cash, go for Linux. Both will take some time to get used to. But once you are familiar, you will not even think about Windows!

tough call but the apple OS is very strogn!
