Training your body...

Does anyone know if it's possible to train your body to accept a certain amount of sleep? Different people I've talked to all have different amounts of sleep they require for each day. Right now I typically go to bed at 10pm and wake up at 6am. I am almost always good and ready for bed by 10pm, and often at times I wake up in the morning right before my alarm is going to sound. Knowing all this, this leads me to believe my body as been trained to this certain sleeping habit. What I'm wondering though is if I can train my body to a different sleeping habit. For example, if I wanted to be able to stay up until midnight every night and still get up at 6am, would my body be trainable to opperate as normal on only 6 hours of sleep? My reasoning behind this is that if I could get away with doing this, I would get so much more accomplished each day!! It would give me two extra hours to do whatever, housework, myLot, other misc projects. Has anyone ever tried doing this, or have experience or know of any information about this? Maybe there is something I could be eating that boosts energy or something to that affect. I will take any tips anyone has to offer. Thanks!

To be safe and give your body the rest it needs you really need about 8 hours of sleep a night. That said, every person is a little different. Some need seven, some need nine. I personally need about nine and now that I am pregnant I need nine plus an hour to two hour nap in the afternoon. I understand wanting more hours in the day but you need to do what is healthy for your body. Maybe you could try cutting out thirty minutes and seeing how you feel after a week of that. If you're tired and feel that you need more rest then they best thing to do would be to give your body that rest it needs. It sounds like your body is pretty used to the sleep it is getting so good luck making a change!

Thank you for the response. I can really see where you are coming from with your advice, and I do agree with it. I required more sleep when I was pregnant as well, especially during my first trimester. It seemed like no matter how many hours I slept at night, by the time the day was half over, I was beat and ready for a nap! But about a year ago I tried training my body to stay up later at night, but slowly, like about 20 or 30 minutes a night, and it seemed like I got pretty used to it. But somehow I got out of the habit. I guess my ultimate goal in trying to get more accomplished is mainly because since my husband has been laid off from work I've been a little obsessed about trying to earn some extra money, so by having a little extra time in my day I will have more time to work to earn some money. But I will definitely try it out a little at a time to test it out. Thank you very much for your input.

My mother and grandmother could do it,its like their biological clock was set to wake up at a certain time and no matter the day or circumstances of the previous day ,they coudl never sleep beyond that point.I on the other hand could sleep for two days. I am able to train my body somewhat to wake up especially on morning when I have to go to work but it is not at a specific time because there are time when I get up earlier than normal and times when I get up later depending on my previous day's activities

Thank you for the response. I kind of wonder if it just depends on the person and their biological clock, and possibly even your age. I work with a lady that is 62 and she gets about 4 hours of sleep a night. She stays up late and gets up at about 4am and leads a VERY active lifestyle. She does all sorts of pilates, yoga, and works out daily. She's the healthiest 62 year old woman I've ever met! I would love to be able to have the kind of lifestyle she has when I'm her age. I totally envy her, but anyone can do it, they just have to have their mind set to it.

I think its not possible because it seems too unrealistic.
