My daughter Lily is getting really into writing and drawing. It is about the only thing that gets her to sit still for more than 5 minutes, so of course I encourage it. She is actually getting good. She has a lot of control when she writes and she holds the pen the right way and everything. Did your kids like to try to write at a young age? How would you encourage this talent of hers?

I have my daughters 1st drawing. She was 9 months old. And to this day she is a little artist. At 5, her favorite kindergarten class is art. To encourage her, just keep giving her the opportunity to do it.

She has a few notebooks that are just for her drawings. She has just spent the last half hour doing nothing but doodling in a notebook with an ink pen.

Children love to write & draw! I would make sure you have lots of different writing (or 'mark-making') materials around and a wide variety of things to write on... different colours, shapes and textures, plain, squared, lined. She could 'write' with sticks or her finger in a sandtray or on rolled out dough/plasticine; you could buy a cheap t-shirt & let her try some fabric painting (as long as she's old enough to realise that she shouldn't write on all her clothes!); let her ice some small cakes with those squeezy icing tubes; try getting her to write with a white crayon and then painting over the paper with a dark colour....magic! at this time of year you could try some 'glitter glue' pens to make cards or calendars for grandparents/aunties & uncles etc. Hope you and Lily have lots of fun!!

My kids are grown but my grandkids...I encouraged them in every way I can...the youngest lives close so we do alot of arts and crafts....she loves it! Right now though I am trying to start setting boundries for her to improve her skills like coloring inside the line...and not mixing so many colors when she paints....she loves to mix colors...in frosting too!

From the picture, it does look like she is trying to 'write.' She's placing characters along the page slightly spaced. I think that's neat and shows a bit of how her mind is working at this early age.

I'm a teenager (so I don't have kids) but I have ideas about encouraging it. Maybe you could try and write something simple for her and see if she catches on and tries to copy it.

I don't know how well you can see it in the picture, but she is trying to write letters. She can make some numbers, but I am not sure they are on purpose. She does 2,3,6, and 8 all the time. That is with me not giving them to her to write.

This is so good as Lily is young. Isn't she just two years old? I would not 'teach' her anything just let her use all sorts of materials and play with shapes etc. Just give her the materials and a little help when necessary. My grand twins write everywhere. Even on the walls. They must get up at night to do this as we have never caught them. Marks appear like magic and when questioned they each blame the other one. To hold a pencil correctly is amazing in such a young child. she is definitely advanced in this area as is goung to be an exceptionally bright child. Blessings!

She is not quite 2. She will turn 2 on January 23rd. She was trying to say her ABC's today while she was doodling, then she handed me her pencil as if to ask me to write them down for her. I was told the holding a pencil properly is something most kids do not master until they are at least 3.

You have to forgive me - some days Iam not sharp! I used to teach but have just showed Lily's writing to my DIL who is an educator and specialist teacher with young children. when I told her that she was holding the pencil properly she confirmed what you have just said and that had forgotten. This is one smart little girl. please can you send me a list of your postings. I do check by button each day but am still not receiving your postings. Blessings

She has got you as a cheerleader, and that is the most important part of encouraging. I still remember when my mom would brag on me when I was a small child. It made me feel so good! What about stencils? Sometimes they are even made into a ruler. She could trace the shapes, the letters, and all that fun stuff.
