Eating and the human animal

I am setting here eating some of those horrible tasting Pringles Extreme dill pickle flavored ones and it got me to thinking about the difference in us humans and the animals when it comes to eating. Do you think that dogs and cats can taste the difference in the food we give them? I know that there are dog foods that are supposed to appeal to the dog or cat taste but are they really appealing to the cat or dog or is it us the human animal that these foods appeal to so we think that our pets will like them? We give our dog and cat the same brand and the same type in that brand because I have heard that to keep changing it would up set their stomachs, but wouldn’t they get tired of the same thing every day? Is the human animal the only one that thinks we need a big variety in our foods? Are we the only animals that eat just to be eating? Why do you suppose we eat after our stomachs are full?

I know when i had my dog, that she was very picky. She only ate certain dog food and she was never full. I eat when i'm full because my boyfriend cooks so good.

I totally believe that dogs taste food differently because why else would there be different flavors of dog treats out there. Now as for them tasting bacon just like we taste bacon i'm not so sure of that. I do know dogs like certain things and dislike other things. Like for example give a dog a piece of lettuce, he'll chew on it then spit it out like what the hell was that! It's funny.

do they really taste food like we do? our dog just gobble her food down so fast she wouldn't have time to really taste. I'm sure the lettuce leaf you spoke is because of the texture.

We keep eating because the food taste so good. Yes dogs and cats know the difference in foods. Due to the lack of money and also due to the fact of feeding lots of animals. I have to buy the cheaper food. I do doctor it up and put a little bit of canned food with it. On a good week I will sometimes buy the more expensive cat food. The cats know their stuff. They atart tearing the bag open. They won't do that for the cheap stuff. They will eat the cheap stuff because they have too, they prefer the better stuff. I am talking about the normal 9 lives, meow mix, that stuff. I once got a couple of coupons for some free dog and cat food. This was the real expensive stuff. $10 for a 4 lb bag, and you could only get it at the pet store. Neither the dog or cats liked that stuff. I would have been really upset if I had bought it. I don't think I would like pickle tasting chips neither. I don't like the vinegar kind neither

Hmmm good question. I do know that I have changed my cats food before and it does mess with their stomachs. I try to blend the new food in with their old food if I am going to change to a different brand and it helps not to upset their stomachs as bad.

I think pets always seem to like our food better so I think that it does taste quite a bit better to them than their cat and dog food.

my cat definitely can taste the difference in what i feed him. he likes whiskas better than friskies! i noticed that he tends to eat more when we have whiskas! when we run out of thr dry cat food, we sometimes feed him rice and fish but he doesn't really touch the stuff! i am talking about one cat in particular. our other cats seem to be fine with the rice and fish. haha :)

If this should happen to post twice, I got that dreaded 'page not found' error, so am trying again... All very good questions! I know my cats have preferences in the types of dry food they get. There's a couple of brands that they don't care for, and pretty much won't eat. I do switch around within the brands that they do like. I got a sample size of kitty gourmet treats that I give here and there in the evening, and even though they have their regular food sitting out, they readily come zooming when I get that bag out lol. I think the pet food companies cater more to the human impulse and our tastes more than the animals. My dog, on the other hand, has several food allergies, so I'm limited to what brands and ingredients I have to get. As long as it doesn't have rice in it, or too many food colorings, she's OK. I mostly stick to this one brand, as if I change she gets digestive problems. I only get this other brand if I can't find the kind she's safe with. She never seems to get sick of the same taste every day, and readily eats it. As for us humans, I think we keep eating because it tastes good. Also, I've heard that we seem to eat faster, so it's one of those things where our bellies are full before our brain lets us know it's time to stop. (At least that's MY excuse to keep on munchin hahaha.) Dill pickle flavored Pringles....ewwwwwww, I don't think I'd like those!
